An Indian Ocean goby, Oxyurichtys keiensis (Smith, 1938), is recorded from the northern Levantine coast of Turkey. The identification of Oxyurichtys keiensis was carried out using morphological characters and DNA barcoding data. This species is distinguished from only lessepsian congeneric, in the Mediterranean Sea, Oxyurichtys petersii, by sensory papilla pattern, scales in lateral series and tongue shape. In this study, the presence of the 13rd alien gobiid species of the Mediterranean Sea, which tends to create established populations far from its native distribution is presented.
There are two species of garfish belonging to the genus Belone (garfish B. belone and short-beaked garfish B. svetovidovi) in the coastal regions of Türkiye. It is known that Belone belone is distributed all around the Turkish coasts, and Belone svetovidovi is distributed only in the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Türkiye. These species’ morphological similarities and mainly overlapped morphological characters led to confusions for years. The present study represents the first detailed morphological and molecular analysis including twenty-two body portions and DNA barcode analysis of B. svetovidovi and reports the newly established populations in the Sea of Marmara with molecular and morphological evidences.
Şensurat-Genç T., Seyhan-Öztürk D., Iwatsuki Y. 2020. First record of the doublebar seabream, Acanthopagrus bifasciatus (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Sparidae), in the Aegean Sea. Acta Ichthyol.Piscat. 50 (1): 97-101.Abstract. The present paper reports the second record of a Lessepsian migrant, Acanthopagrus bifasciatus (Forsskål, 1775), in the Mediterranean Sea and first record from the Aegean Sea. The species is distinguished by the counts of 5½ scale rows between the fifth dorsal-fin spine and lateral line, dorsal and caudal fins yellow, without a dense black margin of dorsal-fin or narrow black edge along rear margin of caudal fin which is being diagnostic characters of this species.
The smallest fish of the Mediterranean Sea, pygmaean goby, Pomatoschistus nanus, and Massuti's goby, Buenia massutii, were obtained from new locations. While P. nanus specimens were collected from both the north-eastern and south-eastern Aegean Sea, B. massutii specimens were collected from two different sub-basins, Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea, representing the first report of this species in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The species were identified by both morphological and molecular techniques. The present paper contributes to filling gaps in the knowledge of the limited distribution of these species in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
