The evidence that systemic lupus erythematosus (S.L.E.) is a complex disease developing as a result of an auto-immune process is based on the finding in the serum of abnormal antibody-like globulins which can be shown to react with the patient's own blood cells and certain plasma constituents, and presumably result from the activity of immunologically-competent cells. Factors with affinity for nuclear antigens are prominent among the many abnormal proteins so far identified.
