Adults and adolescents, who as children, received day or residential treatment were followed up ten years after treatment completion. No differences were found between the two treatment modalities on follow-up ratings of personal and social adjustment. This pattern was not influenced by gender, IQ, or presenting problem. Overall, about two-thirds of the children demonstrated improvement at follow-up. As expected, individuals demonstrating higher levels of personal and social adjustment at initial assessment were functioning better at outcome. However, the magnitude of therapeutic gain was not significantly different for mild versus moderate-to-severe presenting problems. Suggestions for future research are included.
Pediatric neurological examination revealed positive findings for one‐third of a residential treatment center population. Children with positive neurologicals were found to make less gain in academic achievement, as compared to other children. Significant correlations were also obtained between positive neurologicals and motor development, coordination, and change in Performance IQ.
ABSTRACT." The adaptive behaviors of twelve children and six staff members in a residentail treatment setting have been recorded from admission to termination. Using General Systems approach we found clear isomorphism between these behaviors and normal child development. Adaptive stages for both groups include monitoring-regulation, focalization symbiosis, mutual reciprocity, individuation-separation, and termination. Characteristic behaviors during each stage and differences between male and female sectors of research population are reported in this paper.
The design of a carefully planned treatment program for disturbed adolescents within the framework of Bertalanffy's “Open System” theory is presented in some detail. It follows closely the four psychiatrically important principles of: 1. Openness and interaction (mutuality) 2. Intrinsic spontaneous goal directed activity 3. Maintenance of a “steady state” of balanced tension, and 4. Increasing self-governing organization. It addresses itself to both the patient as a system and the related systems of his ward, his unit (patients and staff), his family, school, and even civic organizations. The treatment program has proven promising in the two years of its existence.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
