The aim of the present study was to compare the profiles of well-being between men and women Mexican university students. A total sample of 708 participants, 374 women and 334 men, aged 18-26 years participated in this study. A quantitative approach with a descriptive and transversal survey design was used. All the participants completed the Spanish version of the Psychological Well-Being Scales. The results of the one-way multivariate analysis of variance, followed by the one-way univariate analyses of variance, showed that compared with the women, the men obtained higher scores on the subscales self-acceptance, positive relationships, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life and personal growth. Because of the differences between men and women in their perception of well-being found, these findings suggest that in order to design any intervention for improving the perceived well-being of the students, the variable gender should be taken into account.
The present study analyses the psychometric properties of the Selfefficacy in the Sociocultural Sphere Scale in men and women university students. The overall sample consisted of 1545 subjects: 616 women and 929 men, with a mean age of 18.11 years (SD= 0.69) and 18.27 years (SD= 0.75) respectively. Psychometric analysis showed that two-factorial structure (promotion of the culture and cultural identity) was viable and adequate for both populations (men and woman) according to the established psychometric requirements when the informers are the students themselves. The results showed that factor structure, factor loadings and intercepts of the instrument could be considered invariant across groups; however, there are differences between groups for the means of factors promotion of the culture and cultural identity.
The quality of life is a state of general satisfaction that is manifested from the perception of individuals of their physical, psychological and social status. In this order, the goal of the present research was to compare the profiles of perceived quality of life in elderly participants from the State of Chihuahua. The total sample was 492 elderly people; 291 women and 201 men, with age ranging between 60 and 90 years. The adopted approach was quantitative with a descriptive, survey-like design. Results from the multivariate analyses of variance, followed up by univariate analyses of variance, showed that men report a better perception of quality of life on the factors physical functioning, vitality, physical role, body pain, emotional role and mental health; with no significant differences on the general health and social functioning factors. These results reveal that in general men in comparison to women show higher levels of perception of quality of life. However, it is important to develop more research because the topic trascends the scope of the present study.
The goal of the present research was to compare the profiles of old age prejudice in male and female students from the area of physical activity. The study was conducted from January to October 2016. Participants were recruited from different semesters of the Physical Education and Human Motricity bachelor's degrees offered at the Faculty of Physical Culture Sciences of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua, Mexico. The sample was obtained through convenience sampling, and included 1652 participants; 828 women and 824 men, mean age was 20.51 ± 1.83 years 20.90 ± 2.03 years respectively. The approach of the study was quantitative with a descriptive survey-like design. All participants completed the Questionnaire on Negative Stereotypes towards Old Age. Results from the Multivariate Analyses of Variance, and the follow-up Univariate Analyses of Variance, show that men report greater levels of prejudice towards old age on the sociomotivational (F = 31.657, p<.001) and character-personality (F = 15.789, p<.001) factors. No differences were found on the health factor (i.e., mental and physical). These results suggest that when designing any type of intervention in which the purpose is to improve the perception of young people towards the elderly, the variable gender should be considered. Future research should replicate these findings in larger samples.
