The reported interval between re¬ ceipt of specimens and availability of laboratory results varies between two and 60 days, with an average of seven days. In the absence of state fa¬ cilities, specimens may be sent for testing through any state laboratory to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Virology Section, 1600 Clifton, Atlanta 30333. The CDC requires 3.0 ml of serum or spinal fluid. The speci¬ mens should be shipped frozen and a brief clinical history should also be forwarded. The results are sent within seven days after receipt of the specimens to the state laboratory that requested the service. We strongly recommend greater availability and use of these tests of measles antibody for all suspected SSPE patients.
