Despite many research on the relation between social media and college students, the results are still varied. Moreover, a study that focuses on patterns of social media use is still limited, especially in Indonesia. Therefore, this study tested the relationship between patterns of Instagram (IG)-a popular social media in Indonesia-use and social adjustment of the first-year college students. This correlational study involved 137 college students in Jakarta Greater Area. Data were gathered using The Instagram Perceived Use Scale and The Social Adjustment subscale of The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ). The multiple regression statistical analysis showed that among four patterns of IG use, only three patterns related to the freshmen' social adjustment. They were the pattern of maintaining a social connection (MSC), sharing and seeking personal information (SSPI), and gaming (GAME). Furthermore, MSC was the only significant predictor to college freshmen's social adjustment. Meanwhile, there was no correlation between social adjustment and using IG for pursuing social romantic or sexual relationships (PRSR). In conclusion, IG use could significantly predict first-year college students' social adjustment as long as the usage is intended to maintain their social connections.
Kata kunci : siswa berkebutuhan khusus, anak berkebutuhan khusus, disability awareness, sekolah dasar, guru ABSTRACTTeacher’s knowledge about disability is crucial to handle special needs student. This study examined the influence of social networking service (SNS) usage, especially LINE, on the first-year college students' social adjustment in Indonesia. We hypothesized that the number of LINE friends from the same university, the number of actual friends in LINE, and propensity to use LINE predicted the social adjustment of first year students. To examine the hypothesis, we surveyed 120 first-year college students. Linear regression analysis showed that LINE usage affected students' social adjustment. The number of actual friends in LINE and propensity to use LINE to collaborate with other students positively predicted social adjustment. On the other hand, the number of college friends in LINE did not contribute significantly to their social adaptation. These results give more evidence of the beneficial effect of SNS, especially LINE, on the first-year college students' social adjustment in their campus. However, it is essential to note that SNS would give a beneficial effect if students could develop a real friendship through it and use it for collaborative activities.
This study aimed to investigate the impact of two kinds of exposure to the international environment on international students' cultural intelligence (CQ). We examined whether students who had the experience of living abroad for a minimum period of six months or those who had participated in international education would have higher CQ than their fellow students who did not have such experiences. An online survey measured the CQ of 359 degree-seeking college students from Indonesia in several countries with CQS (Cultural Intelligence Scale). T-test analysis was conducted to compare the CQ scores between students with different experiences of international exposure. Pearson product-moment and one-way ANOVA analyses were also performed to examine the relationship of CQ with age and level of education. The results indicated no significant difference in CQ between students based on their prior experience living abroad or participating in international education. However, students who had lived abroad before scored higher on CQ's metacognitive and motivational aspects. Older students and students in higher levels of education also showed higher CQ scores. These results provide further discussion on the impact of exposure to the international environment on students' CQ. Some types of exposure to international environment appears to assist the development of some aspects of the CQ of international students. However, the extent of the effects might further depend on other factors. Furthermore, the results also suggested that more agencies could act as alternatives strategies to develop students' intercultural competencies.
