Plants respond to pathogen infection and environmental stress by regulating the coordinate expression of many stress-related genes. In plants, the expression of the glycolytic enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) is induced under environmental stress. This work was aimed at investigating whither the expression pattern of cytosolic GAPDH is also modulated upon infection of potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L.) with the late blight fungal agent Phytophthora infestans. Northern blot analysis showed the accumulation of the GAPDH gene transcripts in leaves and stems of inoculated potato plants. When tuber discs were treated with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), an elicitor found in P. infestans, GAPDH gene transcripts level increased. The increase was parallel to that of the hydroxymethyl glutharyl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR), an enzyme involved in pathogen defense reactions. Glucans obtained from P. infestans cell wall acts synergistically with EPA on GAPDH and HMGR gene induction. Salicylic acid, an endogenous signal for inducing systemic acquired resistance, was also effective in stimulating the GAPDH transcript accumulation in potato leaves. These experiments suggest that related multi-component factors, which are part of both primary and secondary metabolism, are probably regulated by similar signal transduction pathways when they are induced under biotic or abiotic stress conditions.
The present study reports on the first isolation of Tenacibaculum maritimum in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in Chile. In March 2020, two cages raising rainbow trout (~250 g) in the Los Lagos Region suffered a disease outbreak. In total, 17,554 fish died (3.5%-4.8% accumulated mortality). Microbiological analysis of the diseased fish obtained two representative isolates (i.e. Tm-035 and Tm-036). These were obtained from the external gross skin lesions-typical of tenacibaculosis-of two fish. Phenotyping, PCR tests and sequencing of the 16S rRNA and housekeeping genes confirmed the isolates as T. maritimum. The pathogenic potential of Tm-035 was further assessed by bath challenging Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), which killed 70 ± 15% of fish within 11 days. Dead fish presented the same external clinical signs as did the farmed rainbow trout specimens. This research further broadens the known host distribution of this pathogen. Furthermore, the virulence experiments demonstrated that T. maritimum does not have a specific host. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the risk of T. maritimum for the O. mykiss farming industry.
We studied object exploration and manipulative behavior in wild‐caught Chimango Caracaras (Milvago chimango), an opportunistic and generalist raptor species, in relation to age and sex differences. Each bird was presented with six objects. We then recorded the latencies to approach and first contact with the objects, the number of objects explored, and the number of exploration events performed on each object. Age influenced the tendency to explore in M. chimango. Compared with adults, juveniles were more likely to explore the objects, approaching and contacting them more quickly. The number of objects explored was also higher in young than adult birds. Both age classes used a variety of manipulative behaviors to explore the objects, some of which have been described as play in others studies. Sex did not affect an individual's likelihood to explore or the number and frequency of manipulative behaviors used during object exploration. The tendency for both young and adult birds to explore and manipulate objects that not resemble prey is likely to be a distinct advantage for a generalist species like M. chimango which must cope with a high diversity of modified environments.
