Purpose -This paper aims to test an interaction effects model that includes perceived community support, community satisfaction, and post-adoption behaviours by analysing a social networking site called Tuenti. Inclusion of routinisation as a moderator allows, in particular, the overcoming of inconsistencies of relationships among key drivers found in previous studies. Design/methodology/approach -The research uses partial least squares to estimate the parameters of the interaction effects model. Findings -Overall, community satisfaction leads Tuenti members to develop community participation and feelings of belonging, and identification with other members. In particular, routinised behaviours predispose members to a higher influence of community satisfaction on community integration -reducing the main effect of perceived support. The higher community satisfaction also results in a lower influence of perceived support on active participation. Originality/value -Although previous research provides evidence of the possible effects of perceived community support and satisfaction on social behaviours, a review of the literature reveals that there are still very few published studies that analyse the interaction effects of community satisfaction and routinisation and consequently, improve the explanatory power of the theoretical framework.
The use of natural resources as an input to economic growth and the interactions between economic and ecological systems have resulted in an accumulation of environmental externalities. This accumulation can negatively affect future levels of welfare and economic growth. In this paper, such dynamics are assessed and quantified by introducing explicit environmental externality variables in a production function. This is performed in an endogenous growth model where cumulative environmental externalities interact with economic growth. Using efficiency analysis, a dynamic econometric model is estimated showing the significance of a negative influence of past levels of use of natural resources on GDP over a broad range of stochastic frontier analysis estimations. The results are applied to propose an alternative specification to the production function of a modelling tool used by the European Commission for the assessment of climate policies in the European Union. The findings show that observed GDP is overestimated when environmental externalities are not considered.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, the study aims to investigate the effects of personal innovativeness and familiarity on social integration in the domain of social network site (SNS) innovation. Second, the study seeks to examine the influences of satisfaction and trust on social integration. Design/methodology/approach – Structural equation modelling is proposed to assess the relationships between the constructs, along with the predictive power of the model. Findings – The results demonstrate that increasing satisfaction, trust, and familiarity and assisting members’ personal innovativeness are important initiatives that promote social integration, reduce competition between my SNS and others, and consequently, inhibit opportunistic behaviour. Research limitations/implications – The model does not include all the relevant variables. The sample is not random and thus it is not necessarily representative of the population. Practical implications – Managers must take familiarity and innovativeness into account to customise their social strategies in order to ensure enduring enthusiasm for SNSs. Likewise, fostering members’ satisfaction through more gratifying and easier interactions is an effective strategy to promote social integration. Furthermore, SNSs should prioritise their initiatives for enhancing perceived control by making clear rules and management procedures available, as well as the required legal aspects and seals of approval that will increase levels of trust. Originality/value – A review of the literature reveals that very few studies analyse the effects of personal differences and relationship quality on social integration. This work therefore improves the explanatory power of existing theoretical frameworks.
This paper introduces a new perspective on the impacts of tourism on host communities by analyzing the links between tourism specialization and quality of institutions. Our research has two principal aims: firstly, to test the significance and sign of this relationship; and secondly, to explore the channels through which tourism could affect institutional quality. To this end, an econometric analysis is conducted using a sample of 92 countries over the period 1995-2014. The results indicate that there is a significant and positive association between tourism specialization and institutional quality. Moreover, this relation can be explained through three main channels: level of income, income inequality, and economic freedom. Este trabajo aporta una nueva perspectiva sobre los impactos del turismo analizando las relaciones entre la especialización turística de un país y la calidad de sus instituciones. La investigación plantea dos objetivos: (1) testar empíricamente la significatividad y signo de dichas relaciones y (2) explorar los canales a través de los que se producen. Realizamos un análisis econométrico para 92 países y 20 años. Los principales resultados indican la existencia de una asociación significativa y positiva entre turismo y calidad institucional que se produce principalmente a través de tres canales: nivel de renta, distribución de la renta y libertad económica.
