Integration of high speed electronics and micro-optics allows ultra-wide band optical transmission. The project presented in this paper combines the versatility and high performance of modem FPGA chips equipped with high speed transceivers, high speed PCB design for multichannel systems and the advantages of optical transmission systems, like better signal to noise ratio, lower attenuation, lower crosstalk, higher bandwidth and smaller sized interconnects compared to current electrical transmission systems
Optical interconnects have become very interesting for short reach data transfer. We examine a new concept for integration and miniaturization of such systems based on recent experiments. The application of these designs is an active optical cable. The advantages of the concept and the employed technologies are presented.
