An innovative method was developed to detect fluoroacetate poisoning in cattle by headspace/gas chromatographic analysis of earwax samples of intoxicated cattle. Samples were collected from 2 groups of cattle subjected to induced fluoroacetate intoxication, each group receiving a different dose of acetamide (antidote). Monofluoroacetic acid was detected in samples of intoxicated cattle in concentrations inversely proportional to the dose of acetamide. Thus, earwax analysis represents a successful approach for detection and monitoring of fluoroacetate poisoning.
The Girolando breed is used in pasture-based dairy production systems in Brazil to associate the high production of Bos taurus to the rusticity and thermal adaptation of Bos indicus. This study was designed to evaluate the physiological response to a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α)-GnRH protocol to synchronize the ovulation in 40 Girolando heifers of a pasture-based dairy production system and its relationships with the temperature and humidity index (THI) during the dry (DS) and rainy season (RS) in the tropical savannah-Brazil's cerrado biome. Responses were characterized by follicular and corpus luteum number and diameter, ovulation (D9), and pregnancy rates after first AI. Total follicle number (8.1 ± 0.3 × 8.8 ± 0.3), D9 ovulatory follicle diameter (11.9 ± 0.4 × 10.1 ± 0.4 mm), corpus luteum diameter (8.6 ± 1.3 × 3.9 ± 1.5 mm), corpus luteum score (3.7 ± 0.8 × 1.8 ± 1.0), corpus luteum diameter after AI (9.6 ± 1.6 × 3.9 ± 1.5 mm), and corpus luteum score after AI (3.2 ± 0.4 × 0.9 ± 0.6) in DS and RS differed (P < 0.01). D9 ovulation rate was 40 % (DS) and 20 % (RS), without differences (P > 0.05). Pregnancy rate was 45 % (DS) and 11 % (RS), with differences (P < 0.01). THI differed between DS and RS (P < 0.01). THI may interfere in the follicular and luteal dynamics and in the response of Girolando heifers to the GnRH-PGF2α protocol in the tropical savannah, thus reducing the chances of pregnancy at the first artificial insemination.
The livestock industry in the western United States loses an estimated $500 million annually from livestock production losses due to poisonous plants. Poisoning of livestock by plants often goes undiagnosed because there is a lack of appropriate or available specimens for analysis. The Lupinus species represent an important toxic plant in western North America that can be toxic and/or teratogenic to livestock species due to the quinolizidine alkaloids. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of using earwax, hair, oral fluid, and nasal mucus as noninvasive specimens to determine livestock exposure to the teratogenic Lupinus species. Quinolizidine alkaloids were detected in these four matrices in cattle that were administered a single dose of Lupinus leucophyllus. In addition, quinolizidine alkaloids from lupine were detected in the earwax of cattle that grazed on lupine-infested rangelands. This study demonstrates the potential of earwax, hair, oral fluid, and nasal mucus as noninvasive specimens for chemical analyses to aid in the diagnosis of livestock that may have been exposed to and poisoned by plants.
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência da aplicação de progesterona injetável após a Inseminação Artificial em Tempo Fixo (IATF) em vacas Nelore. Neste estudo foram utilizadas 49 vacas Nelores criadas em regime extensivo com suplementação mineral e com escore de condição corporal de 3. As vacas foram sincronizadas e posteriormente a IATF foram separados aleatoriamente em dois grupos experimentais: vacas não receberam a progesterona injetável (T1), vacas duas doses 150 mg de progesterona injetável, via intramuscular nos 4º e 14º dia após a IATF (T2). Decorridos 100 dias da IATF realizou-se o diagnóstico de gestação por ultrassonografia. A taxa de prenhez entre os tratamentos foi compara pelo teste de Qui-Quadrado. O uso de progesterona injetável não influenciou taxas de prenhez em vacas Nelore após IATF durante a estação de monta, porém, a diferença numérica obtida pode significar o aumento do número de bezerros nascidos em sistemas de criação em larga escala.
