This qualitative study intended to entail human capital development element according to al-Ghazali. Literature review has been done throughout this study using primary and secondary sources and also obtaining opinion and approval from three experts in psychology and sufism. Researcher used the analytical content that is then categorized according to thematic method. Findings obtained concluded that there are three themes. First theme al-Ghazali concept of human capital development is further divided into three components. The first one being achieving balance between spiritual and physical development. Second component stressing that the spiritual component is further divided into four equally crucial parts namely; ruh, nafs, qalb and mind. Third component is mainly about relationship of mankind to Allah s.w.t that involves knowledge and relationship amongst mankind that involves deeds. Second theme entails the human capital development that puts Islam, Iman and Ihsan as the main key point in its framework. Even al-Ghazali himself established a stepwise methodology of this theme; mujahadah al-nafs, riyadah al-nafs with its peak being tazkiyah al-nafs. Last concept discussing about the spiritual values that contains the dichotomy of positive and negative values. The positive values is referring to the part in Ihya’ book namely the munjiyat (the ways to salvation) while the negative values are referred as muhlikat (the ways to perdition). It is the researcher interest for this al-Ghazali advancement of thoughts is being implemented in each and every human capital development models and modules as it is truly still relevant for today’s application.Keywords: Al-Ghazali, Values and Human Capital Development.
The doctrine of seven grades of Being (Martabat Tujuh) has been widely known to be a sufi interpretation of God’s Oneness (al-Tawhid). It originated in the subcontinent of India in the early seventeenth century. The doctrine was later introduced in Aceh and gained popularity among the Malay sufi authors and practitioners until the present day. Amid its wide acceptance, the teaching has long been considered by many scholars to be incompatible with the Islamic principle teachings of God’s Unity. The purpose of this article is to give an insight into the background of the writing of the Tuhfah al-Mursalah Ila Ruh al-Nabiyy and to establish its credibility as an authentic Islamic work by a recognized Muslim sufi scholar. To achieve its objectives, data of this writing was gathered through the usage of document analysis and then described using deducted and inducted analysis. This article found that the Tuhfah al-Mursalah was originally written to combatting misinterpretation of the teaching of wahdat al-wujud in the subcontinent India. It was later exported to the Aceh in the early sixteenth century. The work was written by a knowledgeable and important Indian Muslim sufi scholar. His credentials as a Muslim scholar were testified with few commentaries on the Tuhfah al-Mursalah by famous and well-known Muslim scholars in the Muslim world. Therefore, this work occupies an important place in providing a true comprehension of the doctrine of seven grades of Being.
Modern society today suffers from various social problems such as child abuse, child rape, domestic violence, gangsterism, vandalism and many more. The emergence of these various social ills stems from the empty and dead soul of society. Thus, this study examines Islamic mysticism which is believed to be the best mechanism for society to treat such problems and diseases because mysticism provides certain methods based on the Qur'an and Sunnah. This qualitative study uses library research such as books, journal articles, newspapers and magazines to find information related to the topic. The results of the study found that Sufism is indeed a holistic mechanism in restoring today's society from various negative diseases and social problems.
Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi is a great figure known as a philosopher in Iran. He is also a sufi member and a founder of the Illumination philosophy. Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi’s life journey from his birthplace, Suhraward to Aleppo, has made Suhrawardi a famous man with the title of al-Ishraq besides the al-Maqtul title. The purpose of this study was to examine the doctrines and thoughts brought by Suhrawardi and to analyze Suhrawardi’s ideology in the work of Hikmah al-Ishraq. The findings of this study are the work of Hikmah al-Ishraq Suhrawardi which is a method that can be used in the knowledge of Tasawuf Islam to achieve the highest goal of Allah. The research methodologies used are historiography and content analysis. Hence, this article focuses on the study of the background of this character and his chosen work, Hikmah al-Isyraq. ABSTRAK Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi merupakan seorang tokoh yang hebat dan dikenali sebagai ahli falsafah di Iran. Beliau juga merupakan seorang ahli Sufi dan pengasas kepada falsafah Iluminasi. Perjalanan hidup Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi yang bermula dari tempat kelahiran beliau, Suhraward hingga di Aleppo telah menjadikan Suhrawardi seorang yang terkenal dengan gelaran al-Isyraq selain gelaran al-Maqtul. Objektif kajian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti doktrin dan pemikiran yang dibawa oleh Suhrawardi dan menganalisis ideologi pemikiran Suhrawardi di dalam karya Hikmah al-Ishraq. Manakala, hasil dapatan kajian ini adalah karya hikmah al-Ishraq Suhrawardi merupakan suatu metodologi yang boleh digunakan dalam ilmu Tasawuf Islam untuk mencapat matlamat tertinggi iaitu makrifat Allah. Metodologi kajian yang digunakan adalah kajian pensejarahan dan analisis kandungan. Justeru itu, artikel ini memberikan tumpuan kepada kajian terhadap latar belakang tokoh ini serta karya beliau yang terpilih, Hikmah al-Isyraq.
