The objectives of this paper is to describe and explain the experential, interpersonal, textual meaning and schematic structure of students’ descriptive writing. This research used descriptive qualitative approach with content and Interview analysis as a tehnique. Descriptive texts which is written by students are the source data in this research. Source data are analyzed through Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory. It is found that students conveyed the experential meaning by using four process (relational 66,02%, Material 17,22%, Mental 9,09% and Existential 7,65%). The students expressed the interpersonal meaning of descriptive text through declarative, imperative, modality and personal pronoun. It was showed that descriptive mostly dominated with declarative form (98,51). The students expressed the textual meaning for their descriptive text through developing themes and rhemes. Half (57,54%) students had planned the rhetorical development of the text. Seventeen descriptive writing were built with two main stages (identification and description). There are 64,7% text was constructed in not proper stages (schematic structures).
This study is aimed to know the improvement in writing background of Classroom Action Reseach proposal by using Scientific Approach done by the sixth semester students of English Department of Nommensen University Academic Year 2020/2021.Scientific writing is a way for someone to put the concept of thinking in written form so that other people can understand what is being thought. The method used here is an action research using Scientific Approach.In conducting this classroom action research, the writer divided the action into twocycles. The instrument of collecting data were qualitative data from observation, interview, diary notes, and documentation. Quantitative data were taken from students writing of CAR proposal, which was carried out in the end of everycycle. It is applied for students’ learning in writing Classroom Action research proposal. The students are expected to have logical thinking aspects, data objectivity, vocabulary mastery, use of Enhanced Spelling (EYD), use of effective sentences, and paragraph development. The result showed that Scientific Approach can improve students’ ability to write background of Classroom Action research proposal since inapplying Scientific Approachare found that students are very active in doing observation, questioning, experimenting, associating and communicating so it motivated students to achieve the maximum learning outcomes.
This study is aimed to know to find out the types of Socratic questions used by the students of seventh semester in English Department of FKIP UHN Medan. This research was conducted by descriptive qualitative where the subject is seventh English Department students in Nommensen University academic year 2019/2020 on Seminar Class and the data is students’questions. After analizing questions, it was found that Socratic questions used by the seventh semester of English students in FKIP UHN Medan are questions and clarification, questions that prope purposes, questions that probe assumptions, Question that Probe Information, Reason, Evidence, and Cause, Question about viewpoints or perspectives, Questions that Probe Implication and Consequences, Question about question, Question that Probe Concept, and Questions that probe Inferences and Interpretation. The most dominant is Question that Probe Information, Reason, Evidence, and Cause. It means that the students’ ability in making questions in seminar on ELT presentation is still on the level of getting information from the text, less to have capacity to view or to judge things from some other perspectives, less of preparing themselves reading the seminar paper before the presentation starts. The writer assumed that the students lack of reading.
Pandemi Covid-19 di dunia membuat berbagai usaha dilakukan untuk memutus mata rantai penularan, salah satunya membersihkan tangan dengan hand sanitizer dan menggunakan masker. Masyarakat di sekitar kampus Universitas HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar masih terlihat belum terbiasa menggunakan masker pada saat keluar rumah. Demikian juga upaya preventif pada saat keluar rumah, dengan menyediakan hand sanitizer belum tercapai dengan baik dikarenakan harganya semakin meningkat tajam. Tujuan dari pengabdian masayarakat ini adalah untuk memberdayakan masyarakat dalam penggunaan masker dan hand sanitizer pada saat keluar rumah. Metode pangabdian yaitu berupa donasi masker dan hand sanitizer serta pemaparan cara pemakaiannya secara lisan. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah 400 orang sasaran sudah mendapatkan hand sanitizer dan 800 orang mendapatkan masker. Dengan demikian, masyarakat sekitar pada akhrinya dapat menggunakan masker dan perbekalan hand sanitizer pada saat keluar rumah.
ABSTRAKPenelitian ini berkaitan dengan pengaruh strategi hamburger dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Strategi hamburger merupakan strategi mengorganisasi tulisan yang secara visual menguraikan komponen kunci dari sebuah paragraf. Saat menulis dengan menggunakan strategi hamburger, siswa akan belajar untuk mengingat bagaimana membangun paragraf dan pentingnya masing-masing komponen. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode kuantitatif eksperimental. Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester pertama Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Nommensen Medan. Penulis mengambil 50 siswa sebagai sampel dan mereka dibagi menjadi dua kelompok dengan menggunakan random sampling. Kelompok pertama adalah kelompok A sebagai kelas eksperimen yang diajarkan dengan menerapkan strategi hamburger sedangkan kelompok kedua adalah Grup B sebagai kelas kontrol yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan metode konvensional. Tes lisan digunakan sebagai instrumen pengumpulan data. Tes ini terdiri dari dua jenis, yaitu pre-test dan post-test. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan rumus t-test. Perhitungan menunjukkan bahwa nilai t-observed adalah 3,58, lebih tinggi dari nilai t-table yaitu 1,676 di tingkat signifikansi (p: 0,05) dengan derajat kebebasan (df) 48. Perhitungan ini menunjukkan bahwa Ha diterima sementara Ho ditolak, Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa strategi hamburger signifikan mempengaruhi penulisan teks deskriptif mahasiswa semester pertama Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Nommensen Medan tahun akademik 2016/2017. Penelitian ini disarankan untuk mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris sebagai sumber pengetahuan dan informasi saat melakukan penelitian yang berkaitan dengan topik ini. Disarankan juga bahwa guru yang mengajar mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris sebaiknya menerapkan strategi hamburger sebagai salah satu alternatif dalam pengajaran menulis untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa.
