The objectives of this paper is to describe and explain the experential, interpersonal, textual meaning and schematic structure of students’ descriptive writing. This research used descriptive qualitative approach with content and Interview analysis as a tehnique. Descriptive texts which is written by students are the source data in this research. Source data are analyzed through Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory. It is found that students conveyed the experential meaning by using four process (relational 66,02%, Material 17,22%, Mental 9,09% and Existential 7,65%). The students expressed the interpersonal meaning of descriptive text through declarative, imperative, modality and personal pronoun. It was showed that descriptive mostly dominated with declarative form (98,51). The students expressed the textual meaning for their descriptive text through developing themes and rhemes. Half (57,54%) students had planned the rhetorical development of the text. Seventeen descriptive writing were built with two main stages (identification and description). There are 64,7% text was constructed in not proper stages (schematic structures).
The purpose of this research was to find out the performance of English department students in retelling story. The research was using anthropolinguistic approach. The data were utterances of the performances, interview sheet, audio-video recording and observation sheet. The data were collecting by using Sony HD-AVCHD 9.2 MP Handycam, through interviews and observation. The data were analyzed by using interactive model, namely: data displays, data condensation and drawing conclusion/verifying. This research analyzed text, co-text, and context of retelling story and the components of retelling story. The research result showed that the performance of students in retelling story was lack of self-confidence and nervous. It is showed from their body movement and gestures. The performance of students was classified to three parts namely: opening, core and closing (formal situation). The components of retelling story include Actor, Audience, Situation and learning organization, convention and skill of learning.
The aim of this research was to find the types and meanings of performative verbs of Saluh Suh’s incantation in Simalungun Ethnic. This research employed qualitative paradigm. As a qualitative research, this research used the descriptive methodology with interactive model. This research used two methods in collecting the data, they were direct participatory observation and in depth-open-ended interview. The interactive model was applied to analyse the data. Based on the research findings, two types and meanings of performative verbs were found in Saluh Suh incantation, i.e. illocution and perlocution. Of the two types, the perlocution was the more dominant type of performative verb. Besides, there were thirteen numbers of Illocution and perlocution type was found in Saluh Suh incantation. This research presents a new contribution to the government in term of local wisdom in Simalungun ethnic through language. It means that Simalungun language was a source of culture. More clearly, the performative verb in the sentences of Saluh suh incantation is a source of culture that can be used to be a power of language. In the future, Salauh Suh incantation can be used as a local wisdom to help mothers in normal childbirth. Then the significant contribution especially to Simalungun government is that it may become one of cultural properties, that needs to be preserved. Besides, it can increase or be used to change the economic of Simalungun people.
The digitization of education is the use of technology as an aspect of the learning system, from the curriculum to the education system, which has a very big influence on innovation. As society and academic demand increase in the modern era, the online learning system (OLS) is encountered by society and academics. The multimodal approach refers to the huge learning competence in English ability as if the method or application is integrated in a digitizing manner. The multimodal approach contains using images, verbal and visual integration with words or text which provides meanings in the mode of communication. The process of analyzing and disclosing the text will give essence to the meaning of a picture message in a printed book will reveal projection, enhancement, concurrence. All of which are discussed based on linguistic analysis to relate the text to the general characteristics of language both verbally and visually. Systemic function Linguistics based on the concept of metafunction has ideational, interpersonal, and textual components linking the internal forms of language and their use in semiotic social contexts will be enacted to the research. The research will use descriptive and qualitative methods.
This research aimed to describe the treatment process and the local wisdom of the mangarou totok spell towards the natural resources in the Simalungun community. This research applied an anthropolinguistic approach. The parameters of the study were interconnection, value and sustainability. The data were collected by in-depth open-ended interviews and direct participatory observation. The qualitative paradigm with the interactive model was applied during this research. Based on the research findings, there are eight steps in doing the process of the mangarou totok spell. Some of the types of local wisdom found in this research were: health, politeness, preservation, cooperation, care for the environment, social loyalty, positive thinking, commitment, and compliments. This research presents the variety of contributions focused on the sustainability of natural resources, namely: sitabar banana midrib, betel leaves, gambier, lime, areca nut, and black pepper. This research presents a new contribution to the economic and social activities of the Simalungun community. The implementation of the mangarou totok spell through natural resources can increase the Simalungun community’s income especially for shamans and the cheap cost of medications for patients. The mangarou totok spell also improves social activities because it teaches society to help one another voluntarily through budget treatment. The Simalungun community has lived in harmony by implementing the mangarou totok spell, the implementation of which requires the society to coexist with nature which provides them with the materials that they need in practicing the mangarou totok spell.
