Abstract. Safe’I R, Latumahina FS, Dewi BS, Ardiansyah F. 2021. Short Communication: Assessing the state and change of forest health of the proposed arboretum in Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park, Lampung, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2072-2077. Forest health is the fundamental of sustainable forest management. As such, forest health needs to be continually monitored and maintained. This study assessed the state and change of forest health of the prospective arboretum in Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park (Tahura WAR), Lampung, Indonesia, aiming that the arboretum can serve for integrated conservation and education forest (Tahura War). This research used the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method by combining the parameters of vitality (i.e., tree damage and tree crown condition) and biodiversity (tree species diversity) across four Forest Health Monitoring plot clusters. The results showed there was a change in the state of forest health of the prospective arboretum in Tahura WAR. The first measurement showed that 50% of plot clusters had a status of bad, while 25% was moderate and 25% was good. The results of the second measurement showed that 50% of plot clusters had a status of moderate, while 25% was bad and 25% was good. This finding suggests that the prospective arboretum experienced changes toward better conditions in health status. Even so, it is still necessary to carry out regular forest health monitoring activities to determine trends.
The condition of mangrove forests in East Lampung Regency is currently experiencing degradation, resulting in the function of mangrove forests being reduced, especially in preventing natural disasters. This research is the third-year measurement of the activities of monitoring the health of mangrove forests in East Lampung Regency. The purpose of this study was to determine the value and trend category of the health condition of the mangrove forest in East Lampung Regency. The stages of this research, namely: measuring the health trend of mangrove forests in the six FHM clusters that have been built and analysing the data using the Forest Health Assessment Information System software. The results of this study indicate that the trend value of the health condition of mangrove forests in each location is Kuala Penet (8.64-20.90) with a good category because CL-1 and CL-2 are constant, Margasari (2.52-5.57) in the bad category because CL-3 and CL-4 decreased, and Purworejo (5.58-8.63) in the moderate category because CL-5 and CL-6 increased. Thus, the average trend value of the health condition of the mangrove forest in East Lampung Regency (7.70) is in the moderate category. This can provide information to the community on preparedness in dealing with natural disasters.
Damage to mangrove trees is one of them influenced by the types of tree damage. The more types of tree damage to a single mangrove tree, the worse the health level of the mangrove tree will be. This study aims to obtain damage index trend values and types of tree damage in the east coast mangrove forest area, East Lampung Regency. Measurement of the types of damage to mangrove trees was carried out three times using the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method in two FHM cluster plots for each mangrove forest area. Assessment of damage to mangrove trees uses the Damage Index formula. The results showed that the trend index values for mangrove tree damage were 9.3 and 4.5 (Resort Kuala Penet, Way Kambas National Park), 9.2 and 19.8 (Margasari, Labuhan Maringgai), and 6.2. and 9.8 (Purworejo, Pasir Sakti) with the dominant types of damage being open wounds (code 03) 343 damage, damaged foliage/shoots (code 24) 240 damage, and broken/dead (code 22) 158 damage. Thus, the trend of damage index and types of damage to mangrove trees in the east coast mangrove forest area of East Lampung Regency has increased.
The mangrove forest is a forest ecosystem that supports life for the surrounding ecosystem. However, the area of mangrove forests is decreasing. It is recorded that up to 2016, there is only 2.9 million hectares of mangrove forests in Indonesia. Mangrove forests’ existence needs to be maintained in the surrounding ecosystem. One of the efforts to protect the mangrove forest ecosystem is to see changes in mangrove forest health. This effort can be used as the basis for sustainable mangrove forest management—this research’s purpose—this the real aim of mangrove forests on the east coast of Lampung. The study was conducted at three locations on the east coast of Lampung (Pasir Sakti District, Labuhan Maringgai District, and Way Kambas National Park). The method used was the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM). The results showed that mangrove forests’ health value on the east coast of Lampung had positively changed except for cluster plots 2 and 3. The health of mangrove forests on the east coast of Lampung has increased the forest’s health value. The increase in forest health value is influenced by factors from the indicators used, especially vitality.
