Long-term stays in extreme environments, such as Polar Regions, may cause significant changes in the health and well-being of individuals. A systematic overview aimed to map studies about the psychological effects on Antarctic expeditioners. The reviewed data were categorized and divided into two thematic axes: Negative Effects, resulting from harmful psychophysiological variations caused by exposure to the polar stressors, which may present seasonal symptom patterns, altering cognitive performance, mood and interpersonal relationships; and Positive Effects, such as salutogenic results arising from successful adaption to environmental adversities. Due to the great deal of evidence, it is suggested that protection factors should be promoted through preventive approaches, such as psychological training and support in order to reduce symptoms and generate satisfactory adaptation to Antarctica.
AbstractThe study aimed to analyze the relationship between implicit beliefs predictive of athletic ability, the rate of self-determination, perceived discrimination, perception of equal treatment and the importance and utility conferred to physical education. We used a sample of 330 students aged between 13 and 16 years (M = 14.18, SD = 1.90). The regression analysis of structural showed that incremental belief positively predicted self-determination index, while the implicit belief did negatively entity. The index positively predicted self-perception of equal treatment, the perception of the importance and value given to physical education and perceived discrimination negatively. The results are discussed in relation to the promotion of a classroom atmosphere focused on incremental belief that athletic ability can be improved through learning, effort and thus to foster co-educational school.
Aim: to identify how the family perceives the health of the child with obesity and what strategies are used to cope with it. Method: descriptive research of qualitative approach. Data were collected between January and May 2014 through interviews with 14 mothers of obese children. The speeches were submitted to Content Analysis and Thematic Modality. Results: it was observed that some families did not recognize obesity as a health problem, while others identified complications. Encouraging healthy eating habits and practicing physical activities were the main coping strategies adopted by families. However, sometimes some practices harmed health. Conclusion: the family seems to recognize childhood obesity as a health problem when the child has complications and is now facing it. Health professionals should be aware of different ways of understanding and coping with childhood obesity so that they can act in a qualified manner.
ABSTRACT -Psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale in Brazilian adolescentsConsidering the importance of self-concept in the well-being of adolescents, as well as the need for reliable scales that allow its evaluation, the objectives of the present study are to verify the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale-its structure and internal consistency -in a sample of Brazilian adolescents, and to assess the scalar invariance of the scale considering the adolescents' gender. The study included 1,588 adolescents between 12 and 16 years of age, with 65.5% being female. The results indicate that the four-dimensional (academic, family, social and physical), 20-item version of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale presents appropriate reliability and fit indices when performing confirmatory factor analysis for the sample. There is also factorial invariance between boys and girls tested with multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. Keywords: self-concept; self-esteem; adolescents.
