Background: There are low levels of research productivity among Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Africa, a situation that is likely to compromise the development agenda of the continent if not addressed. We conducted a systematic literature review to determine the factors associated with research productivity in HEIs in Africa and the researchers’ motives for research. Methods: We identified 838 papers related to research productivity in HEIs in Africa from various databases, from which we included 28 publications for review. The inclusion criteria were that (i) the paper’s primary focus was on factors associated with research productivity; (ii) the setting was on the higher education institutions in Africa; (iii) the type of publication was peer-reviewed papers and book chapters based on primary or secondary data analysis; and (iv) the language was English or French. Essays, opinions, blogs, editorials, reviews, and commentaries were excluded. Results: Most of the studies operationalized research productivity as either journal publications or conference proceedings. Both institutional and individual factors are associated with the level of research productivity in HEIs in Africa. Institutional factors include the availability of research funding, level of institutional networking, and the degree of research collaborations, while individual factors include personal motivation, academic qualifications, and research self-efficacy. Conclusions: Deliberate efforts in HEIs in Africa that addressed both individual and institutional barriers to research productivity are promising. This study recommends that the leadership of HEIs in Africa prioritizes the funding of research to enable researchers to contribute to the development agenda of the continent. Moreover, HEIs should build institutional support to research through the provision of research enabling environments, policies and incentives; strengthening of researchers’ capabilities through relevant training courses, mentorship and coaching; and embracing networking and collaboration opportunities.

ObjectiveTo determine the prevalence of unmet need for primary healthcare and associated individual and household-level factors in Kenya.DesignThe data for this study are drawn from the 2016 Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey (KIHBS). A multistage sampling technique involving a systematic selection of clusters at the national level and final selection of households was used.SettingThis study was conducted in Kenya. The KIHBS is a nationally representative survey on a wide range of indicators to assess the progress made in improving the living standards of the population at the national level.ParticipantsA total of 9447 households comprising 15 539 household members who reported a sickness or injury over the 4 weeks preceding this survey were included in this study. The study respondents comprised of the household heads.Primary outcome measureThe primary outcome of this study is unmet need for primary healthcare defined as an unexpressed demand for primary healthcare following a reported sickness or injury over the 4 weeks preceding this survey.ResultsAbout one in every five study participants experienced an unexpressed demand for primary care. The odds of having unmet need for primary healthcare were 68% higher among participants without health insurance coverage compared with those with health insurance (adjusted OR 1.68; p<0.001; 95% CI 1.34 to 2.09) and 45% higher among households headed by single or unmarried persons compared with the those who were in a marital union (adjusted OR 1.45; p<0.05; 95% CI 1.06 to 1.98).ConclusionsOur findings show that there is still a considerable unexpressed demand for primary care services despite widespread implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Kenya, with households without a health insurance cover bearing the highest burden. Therefore, the design of UHC reforms in Kenya should focus on embedding social health protection to escalate the demand for primary healthcare services.
Africa could benefit from the demographic dividend by identifying strategies for investing in the massive youthful workforce. The current study employs the social cognitive career theory perspective to assess Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions’ curriculum coverage of various skills in Kenya. We further examine the relevance of the curricula to the labour market and barriers affecting institutions' capacity to implement practical-oriented and demand-driven curricula. A cross-sectional research design was adopted using a mixed-method approach to gather and analyse data. Findings revealed different levels of coverage of soft and technical skills in the curriculum. Inadequate resources, lack of modern equipment and technology, and minimal adoption of practical components in the curriculum were identified as barriers to acquiring skills, consequently affecting TVET students' capacity to secure employment. To promote requisite skills acquisition and accelerate youth employability, we recommend a partnership between TVET institutions and the industry. Assessing how the competencies acquired align with labour market demands is also critical. Evidence gathered from this assessment will inform the improvement of existing on-the-job training, enable institutions to scale-up successful models and foster the development of human capital that is more adaptable to the dynamic world of work.
