In this article, the authors propose the use of conducting patches with slots to design frequency selective surfaces (FSS) with dual bandstop for wireless LAN (WLAN) applications. The simulated results were obtained with the computer program Ansoft Designer TM . A prototype of the designed FSS was built and its transmission characteristics were measured. Excellent agreement between simulated and measured results was obtained. The FSS was useful for rejecting signals from industrial, scientific, and medical and unlicensed national information infrastructure bands and it presented angular stability. The proposed antenna is simply composed of three arc-shaped strips and is capable of generating three separate resonant modes with good impedance matching conditions. The effects of varying the dimension on the proposed antenna performance were also studied. Prototypes of the proposed antenna were constructed and experimentally studied. The experiment results show that the proposed antenna covers 1.66-2.71, 2.95-4.54, and 5.02-6.10 GHz with 210 dB return loss, covering all the 2.4/5.5/5.8 WLAN bands and 2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz bands. Furthermore, this CPW-fed monopole antenna exhibits a nearly omnidirectional radiation pattern in the H-plane and a dipole-like radiation pattern in the E-plane. Also, good antenna gains for operating bands were obtained. V C 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 57:268-273, 2015; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com.
