The combination of 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography (GC) (retention index), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to determine the chemical composition of essential oils of Piper guineense and Piper umbellatum from Côte d’Ivoire. Thus, 54 components, accounting for 91.5% to 97.6%, were identified in the essential oil from aerial parts of P. guineense. In P. umbellatum leaf oil, 49 compounds accounting for 92.8% to 98.7% were identified. Both plants oils were dominated by monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, with α-phellandrene, (2 E,6 E)-farnesol, and linalool as major compounds of P. guineense, whereas the most abundant components of P. umbellatum were linalool and ( E)-β-caryophyllene. (2 E,6 E)-Farnesol, identified for the first time in the essential oil from aerial parts of P. guineense, induced a new chemical composition.
The aim of this survey was to determine the chemical composition of essential oils (EO) of five conifers acclimated in Corsica by GC(RI), GC-MS and C NMR. L. decidua needle and wood EOs contained as majors components: α- and β-pinenes, germacrene D (needles) and bornyl acetate (wood). The EOs of needles, wood and cones of P. menziesii were characterised by β- and α-pinenes, terpinen-4-ol, sabinene, terpinolene (needles and wood), Δ-3-carene (wood) and limonene (cones). Needles and wood EOs of P. ponderosa contained as major components: β- and α-pinenes, Δ-3-carene (wood) and estragole (needles). S. giganteum EOs of foliage and wood were rather similar and dominated by α-pinene, and safrole. The EOs of leaf, wood and cones from C. japonica were very similar, and exhibited α-pinene, sabinene, β-elemol and kaurene as major constituents. It appeared that EO compositions of some species were different from reported literature data.
The compositions of essential oil obtained from leaves, flowers and fruits of Lantana camara L. growing in wild at Côte d'Ivoire, were investigated by GC and 13 C NMR. Thirty-seven compounds accounting for 88.3-94.5% of the oils have been identified. The leaf, flower and fruits of L. camara produced sesquiterpene-rich essential oils predominated by (E)-β-caryophyllene and α-humulene, in addition to the important content of sabinene, -phellandrene and thymol as monoterpenes. It was found the new chemical profiles of L. camara.
