In qualitative educational research, the languages spoken by the participants and the researchers can greatly impact the quality of the data collected. This paper will explore the advantages and disadvantages of being an insider researcher by virtue of speaking the same language(s) as the participants. Whether the researcher is a linguistic insider or outsider, he or she will need to make important decisions with regard to translation and interpretation when conducting cross-language research. Such linguistic decisions can also impact the quality of the data collected and the trustworthiness of the research. The advantages and disadvantages of translation and interpretation in qualitative educational research will be explored. This paper offers researchers and students suggestions for conducting cross-language educational research in an ethical and transparent manner.
Ce texte analyse le paysage linguistique de Saint-Boniface, au Manitoba, une communauté francophone minoritaire. Il démontre que le français y est représenté comme langue ayant un statut minoritaire. Même dans le quartier français de la ville, il est facile de voir l’influence de l’anglais. La majorité des panneaux et des enseignes sont bilingues et, souvent, l’anglais y occupe une position prépondérante. Le vandalisme commis contre l’affichage public en français démontre également qu’il existe encore des relations tendues entre les anglophones et francophones de la ville de Winnipeg. Malgré cela, il s’avère primordial de revendiquer l’utilisation de la langue minoritaire dans son paysage linguistique puisque c’est une manière de légitimer la communauté de langue minoritaire.This article analyzes the linguistic landscape of Saint-Boniface, Manitoba, a francophone minority community. This study shows how the linguistic landscape is representative of the minority status of the French language. Even in the French Quarter of the city, the influence of the English language is clear. The majority of signs are bilingual, and, often, English is positioned as the dominant language. Acts of vandalism also show that tense relationships persist between Anglophones and Francophones within the city of Winnipeg. In spite of this, it is important to mobilize for the use of the minority language in the linguistic landscape as this remains a way to increase the legitimacy of the minority language community
The purpose of this article will be to review how the theory of translanguaging can be used to explore the linguistic landscapes of bi- and multilingual schools. Such an approach requires researchers to view space and language holistically since translanguaging practices occur not only within an individual but also within a particular space. As a result, a school’s linguistic landscape (schoolscape) can be viewed as a representation of the students’ language repertoire. Qualitative data will be presented from three different secondary school contexts in Manitoba, Canada; French immersion single-track, French immersion dual-track and French-language schools. This data will illustrate how translanguaging offers a new way to approach the analysis of schoolscapes in bi- and multilingual contexts. COVID-19 a perturbé la vie des enfants, des adolescents, leurs familles, leurs communautés et les enseignants. À mesure que l'accès et la participation aux expériences éducatives en salle de classe furent influencés par la santé publique générale, l'enseignement des langues et des littératies ont dû se resituer face aux changements à travers les modes de textes, l'interactivité et l'exécution en contextes sociaux, familiaux et scolaires. Cette période prolongée d'incertitude généralisée ainsi que les résurgences au niveau viral, social et politique ont favorisé une vision déficitaire de l'époque. Tout en reconnaissant que cette période de la pandémie a contribué à de formes multiples de pertes, de gains et d'interruptions, le but de ce numéro spécial est de donner une attention particulière aux moments d'espoir en enseignement de la langue et de la littératie, de reconnaître l'apprentissage qui a eu lieu et de se pencher vers les possibilités pédagogiques en envisageant un avenir post pandémie.
