In this work, we use contrast image processing to estimate the concentration of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in a given network. The fractal dimension factor (D) of the CNT network that provides an estimate of its geometrical complexity, is determined and correlated to network resistance. Six fabricated devices with different CNT concentrations exhibit D factors ranging from 1.82 to 1.98. The lower D-factor was associated with the highly complex network with a large number of CNTs in it. The less complex network, having the lower density of CNTs had the highest D factor of approximately 2, which is the characteristic value for a two-dimensional network. The electrical resistance of the thin MWCNT network was found to scale with the areal mass density of MWCNTs by a power law, with a percolation exponent of 1.42 and a percolation threshold of 0.12 μg/cm2. The sheet resistance of the films with a high concentration of MWCNTs was about six orders of magnitude lower than that of less dense networks; an effect attributed to an increase in the number of CNT–CNT contacts, enabling more efficient electron transfer. The dependence of the resistance on the areal density of CNTs in the network and on CNT network complexity was analyzed to validate a two-dimension percolation behavior.
The ideal attributes of light weight, low cost and high power density have made the 2-stroke engine unrivalled in the scooter and moped market for many years. However, the challenges of meeting new emissions regulations, especially the latest Euro III emission test cycle have reduced the 2-stroke's dominance and it is now often considered to be too dirty and inefficient to have a future. As a result its product placement is on the decline. This paper introduces and discusses the latest application of a low-cost high-frequency injection system (Pulse Count Injection [1,2]) to both the fuel flow and lubrication oil flow of a 2-stroke scooter; allowing both fluids to be individually mapped and optimised for the complete engine operating range. This in turn enables the 2-stroke engine to pass the latest Euro III test whilst improving the fuel economy by a considerable margin, without changing the architecture of the engine. Examples of the latest developments of a highly integrated engine management system, including fuel and oil injector technology are shown. The paper draws conclusions from the test results showing the clear benefits of electronic fuel injection both for emissions and fuel consumption, and demonstrates that these benefits are achievable from a compact well integrated throttle body unit suitable for the small 2-stroke engine market.
A reliable, scalable, and inexpensive technology for the fabrication of ordered arrays of metal nanoparticles with large areal coverage on various substrates is presented. The nanoparticle arrays were formed on aluminum substrates using a two-step anodization process. By varying the anodization potential, the pore diameter, inter-pore spacing, and pore ordering in the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template were tuned. Following a chemical etch, the height of the pores in the AAO membrane were reduced to create a dimpled membrane surface. Periodic arrays of metal nanoparticles were subsequently created by evaporating metal on to the dimpled surface, allowing for individual nanoparticles to form within the dimples by a solid state de-wetting process induced by annealing. The ordered nanoparticle array could then be transferred to a substrate of choice using a polymer lift-off method. Following optimization of the experimental parameters, it was possible to obtain cm2 coverage of metal nanoparticles, like gold and indium, on silicon, quartz and sapphire substrates, with average sizes in the range of 50–90 nm. The de-wetting process was investigated for a specific geometry of the dimpled surface and the results explained for two different film thicknesses. Using a simple model, the experimental results were interpreted and supported by numerical estimations.
