Behaviour of bayan sumba bird (Eclectus roratus cornelia Bonaparte) is necessarily observed to support the captive breeding in Hambala, East Sumba. This research aimed to identify the health, breeding ability, and process of adaptation of the bird to new environment to find out about proper management of captive breeding. Bird's behavior was directly observed in captivity. The research found that the bayan sumba bird in Hambala had four main behaviours consisting of 13 kinds activities. These behaviours were (1) moving consisted of flying, walking, fighting, and hanging activities, (2) idle consisted of perching, resting, and exposing himself to the sun activities, (3) ingestive covered eating, drinking, and cleaning up activities, and (4) mating consisted of approaching to attract a hen, touching head of hen (with his beak), and paying court to a hen activities.
Rehabilitation of critical land in Timor Barat should be done with holistic approach considering socio economic and cultural aspect. The problems of forest and land rehabilitation effort in this area are: poverty, less job opportunity, and high dependency on dry farm agriculture and animal husbandry. The rate of critical land in several watershed such as Benain Noelmina in Timor Barat is very high. Therefore, the approach of land rehabilitation should integrated and more specific. This research is intended to gain the information on land rehabilitation alternative through the development of community forest based on mamar system. Methods used on this research were survey on biophysics of mamar and interview with villagers, village administrators, and custom leaders. The results showed that mamar system could be developed as a community forest model to support land rehabilitation program. The benefit of applying this system is that the management of critical land will be based on local inisiative which is suitable with land characteristics, socio culture and indigenous knowledge, therefore it can increase people participation to reach the purpose of forest and land rehabilitation.
Local communities have a strategic role in supporting the activities of forest and land rehabilitation. Various patterns of local adaptation to the environment is one resource that needs to get attention in the planning of sustainable forestry development. Human beings can not be separated from the environment, human and otherwise is a product of environment, so that various forms of adaptation to the environment encountered by the perceptions and experiences interact in the management and utilization of forest resources, soil and water. Local initiatives on the philosophical and practical level, is actually the basic capital for development. This research is study of local initiatives that Lende Ura on the Sumba Barat Daya, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). Research using a descriptive approach through literature and documentation and in-depth interviews that related to the focus conducted studies. Research was done in 2009. Data analysis was carried out by narrative descriptive. Lende Ura is one form of local initiatives is a philosophy of community life in Sumba Barat Daya who view the forest as a bridge for the coming rain. People to understand that forests are well maintained will be a bridge for the rain that they support agriculture and water availability for humans and other living creatures. Lende Ura concept encourage people to value each component of the existing natural resources, and influence either directly or indirectly to the process of rain. Therefore, people do not do illegal logging, forest fires and avoiding the land, preserve water catchment areas through the cultivation of dryland mixed farming and use non-timber forest products.
