In connection with a study of the relation of structure to the plant growth regulating properties of organic compounds, several 3-indoleaeetic acids substituted in the benzene ring have been prepared. The synthesis involved the application of the Japp-Klingemann reaction (1) for the formation of phenylhydrazones, the Fischer synthesis (2) for ring closure followed by hydrolysis of a diester, reesterification to a half ester, and decarboxylation.
