The lesions were hyperintense on T2WIs and DWIs, hypointense on the ADC map image, and enhanced on Gd-T1WIs. On electron microscopy, the lesions showed cytotoxic and vasogenic edema with disruption of the blood-brain barrier. Vasogenic edema seems to develop within 30 minutes in cerebral fat embolism in cats.
We report five cases of complex microphthalmia with other ocular malformations in infants or children, which were evaluated to investigate the relationship between the corneal diameters and total axial length. The size of the globe was measured by using computerized tomographic scans (CT scan), A-scan ultrasonography, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There is a limited range of well-described malformation, including anterior or posterior segment dysgenesis or combined pathology such as corneal opacity, small cornea, iris hypoplasia, lens dislocation, cataract, chorioretinal coloboma, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV), retinal dysplasia, and intraocular tumor. Corneal diameters were correlated significantly with total axial length (r2 = 0.88) and decreased linearly as the total axial length decreased in these cases. However, there was no relationship seen between the total axial length and posterior segment length (r2 = -0.06). The results of this study may aid the clinical ophthalmologist to accurately understand or assess microphthamia combined with other ocular malformations.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the fatigue strength of butt-welded joints with special attention paid to employing different kinds of backing plates. The effect of the undermatched weld was also considered. Four different cases of backing scenarios for butt-welded specimens such as steel backing, ceramic backing, CMT (no backing by cold metal transfer) and UM (under-matched welded specimen) were investigated. A series of fatigue tests was performed to compare the fatigue strength of butt-welded joints with respect to different backing scenarios. Effective notch stress was used for the interpretation of fatigue strength of butt-welded specimens with backing plates based on finite element analyses for calculating fatigue notch factors. When results were presented from the effective notch stress, all backing scenarios considered in this study exhibited the fatigue strengths corresponding to the FAT 225 curve. From the experimental results of this study, it was determined that the fatigue strengths of butt-welded joints were found to be in the order of CMT, ceramic backing, UM, and steel backing. No significant decrease in fatigue strength, however, was observed when backing plates were steel backing and ceramic backing types.
