Introduction: Depression and anxiety disorder are the common mental disorders. Serotonin ) is a well-established neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS). It has a role in the anxiety, depression, appetite, motor, cognitive and autonomic functions, platelet aggregation and regulation of vascular tone. As the CNS is difficult to access, peripheral platelet models are widely used as the indicators of central 5-HT metabolism; moreover, they are known to reflect central serotonergic function. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is contemplated as the marker of platelet function. It is a measure of platelet size and a good indicator of platelet activity. In this backdrop the current study was carried out to evaluate the MPV in depression and anxiety disorders. Methods: Consecutive 90 depressive disorder patients, 76 anxiety disorder patients, diagnosed according to DSM 5 criteria and 49 healthy control subjects were selected for the study. Hamilton
Columnar cell lesions (CCL) of the breast range from the innocuous CAPSS (Columnar alteration with prominent apical snouts and secretions) to DCIS. Their precancerous potential poses diagnostic and therapeutic riddles, especially for those with mammographic microcalcifi cations.Aim To document the incidence of columnar cell lesions in the breast, to study their morphologic spectrum and to study the signifi cance of their association with benign and malignant breast lesions. Material and methodsWe studies 100 consecutive breast specimens. These specimens included biopsies, lumpectomies and mastectomies. Columnar cell lesions were classifi ed as per Schnitt criteria. Associated lesions in the adjacent tissue were also studied. Results Of the 100 samples (43 malignant and 57 benign), 37 cases showed CCL: CAPSS 23, columnar cell hyperplasia-11 and Columnar cell hyperplasia with atypia-3. The commonest associated lesion was fi brocystic change (n=54). Their incidence in benign and malignant lesions was 42% and 30% respectively, with no statistical significance in the difference. Lesions with atypia were seen only in malignant cases. ConclusionColumnar cell lesions are common, and often overlooked. These lesions are seen in association with both benign and malignant breast lesions. It is only the presence of atypia in CCL that warrants a special mention and necessitates follow up, and resection if indicated.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
