Effects of natural weathering were studied relative to the adhesion strength, surface hardness, and color change of coated heat-treated and untreated Turkish fir and Scots pine wood. For this study, water-based coatings (varnish and paint) were applied on heat-treated samples. The coated heat-treated, and untreated samples were naturally weathered for one year. The difference between several properties such as adhesion strength, hardness, and color were measured before and after weathering. The test results showed that varnished heat-treated samples had good performance as compared to those of the untreated samples.
Effects of heat treatment parameters on the physical properties, mechanical properties, and crystallinity index of Scots pine and beech wood were investigated. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) sapwood samples were prepared in 2 cm × 2 cm × 36 cm dimensions by considering the physical and mechanical tests. The samples were heat-treated for 2 h and 4 h at 150 °C, 180 °C, and 210 °C in an atmospheric environment. The shrinking and swelling percentages of all samples were calculated. The compressive strength, bending strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), and hardness tests were carried out. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed to calculate the crystallinity index values. As a result of the study, it was determined that heat treatment generally had a positive effect on the physical properties of Scots pine and beech samples. It was observed that the bending strength of the wood samples decreased up to 180 °C as the temperature increased and then increased. It was determined that the MOE of the Scots pine and beech wood decreased with the heat treatment. As the heat treatment temperature and time were increased, the crystallinity index values initially increased partially and then decreased.
In an effort to reduce negative feedback resulting from temperature fluctuations, house floors are commonly laid with laminate flooring. The aim of this study was to study the thermal insulation properties and adhesion strength of the water-based insulation paint mixed with hollow glass spheres and applied onto the laminate flooring. The objective was to determine whether a prepared insulation paint mixture can be used instead of backing paper. For this purpose, two different laminate flooring samples were used. In the first case, the upper surface of the sample was coated with decorative paper and the lining surface was coated with backing paper. The upper surface of the second sample was coated with decorative paper and the lining surface was not coated with backing paper. Then, insulation paint mixture was applied 2, 4, or 6 times to the lining surfaces of both groups, and experimental results were obtained. As the number of layers was increased, the insulation mixture applied to the lining surfaces of the test samples was found to contribute positively to thermal insulation and adhesion resistance of specimens.
