DNA damage which occurred by the effect of oxidant and mutant agents has an essential role in the development of atherosclerosis. To investigate the possible association between GSTs polymorphism with coronary artery disease (CAD), we investigated the frequency of GSTT1, M1, and P1 genotypes in patients with CAD compared to controls. The genotypes of GSTT1, M1, and P1 were determined in 209 angiographically documented CAD patients and 108 normal coronary artery cases (as controls) by Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction and PCR-RFLP. In CAD patients, the frequency of GSTT1-null genotype was significantly (P = 0.025) lower than that in control. The presence of this genotype was associated with 2.2-fold increased risk of CAD. However, the frequency of GSTM1 and GSTP1 genotypes were not significantly different comparing both groups (P = 0.405 and P = 0.521, respectively). Moreover, non smokers patients had a lower frequency of GSTM1-null genotype (29.2%) compared to non smoker controls (43.5%, P = 0.043). Also, the frequency of both GSTT1-null and GSTM1-null genotypes in patients (3.8%) was significantly lower compared to controls with the same genotypes (10.2%, P = 0.014). Our results indicated that a reduction in the frequency of GSTT1-null and GSTM1-null genotypes that observed in our study might be involved in the pathogenesis of CAD in our population.
Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D) and angiotensin II type-1 receptor (AT1R) A1166C polymorphisms with the risk of preeclampsia and lipid peroxidation in preeclamptic women from Western Iran. Methods: One hundred and ninety-eight preeclamptic women (128 women with mild and 70 with severe forms) and 100 age-and parity-matched controls were enrolled in this case-control study.
Results:The presence of D allele of ACE was associated with a 1.8-fold increased risk of preeclampsia (p=0.002) in total preeclamptic patients. The frequency of AT1R AC+CC genotypes was higher in mild preeclamptic women (32%) compared to controls (27.2%) (p>0.05). In mild preeclamptic women with ID genotype, the level of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was significantly decreased compared to those with II genotype. Also, there was a trend toward increasing malondialdehyde (MDA) and decreasing TAC levels in mild and severe preeclamptic women with AT1R AA through CC genotypes. Conclusions: Our study indicates that lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress are involved in the development of preeclampsia that might be influenced by polymorphism in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system genes.
Geographic tongue is a benign lesion at the dorsum and margins of the tongue that sometimes causes pain and burning sensation. This lesion is characterized by an erythematous area with white or yellow folded edges. The predisposing factors of this lesion include heredity, allergies, psoriasis, stress, fissured tongue and consumption of some foods. The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of geographic tongue and its related factors among the 7-18 year-old students in Kermanshah, Iran. This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in three schools in Kermanshah using multi-stage random cluster sampling method. A total number of 3600 students were examined (1800 girls and 1800 boys). Demographic data and the results of examinations were recorded in a questionnaire. The factors affecting the incidence of geographic tongue were analyzed by the SPSS-20 software and the Chi-square test. The prevalence of geographic tongue was 7.86% (283 individuals). The incidence of this lesion was significantly higher in males than in females (p<0.01). There was no relationship between geographic tongue and psoriasis or fissured tongue. Pain and discomfort during eating was more prevalent in those with geographic tounge compared to those without this condition (p<0.02). The prevalence of geographic tongue among the studied population was 7.86%, and the prevalence of geographic tongue in male students was higher than in female students.
