The controversy of using L1 or L2 only in second language classes has been widely discussed in many studies. Some teachers, however, opt for the middle ground by employing the bilingual approach; they practice code switching to some extent to facilitate teaching learning process. In the context of BIPA teaching and learning this issue has not been sufficiently addressed. Therefore, this study seeks to explore the teachers as well as the students' attitude towards the practice of codeswitching in BIPA classes, specifically in the basic level classes. The factors behind its practice will also be discussed in the light of its benefit and hindrance for teaching learning process. This study employed a quantitative research design by conducting a survey and a qualitative research design by interpreting the result of the interview with the teachers and students. Children in the digital era are exposed to the advancement of information technology and multimedia that might bring both positive and negative influence toward their development. During early childhood, children are using mostly their senses to explore the world around them, including learning some values from the story books exposed to them. However, parents or family do not give optimal support in the children’s learning process. Therefore, it is a challenge for English language teaching (ELT) pre-service teachers in implementing a digital storytelling to engage the children with the learning material and creative ways to optimally utilize technology, but at the same time give a comprehensive support for children to improve their English skills as well as the embedded values within the stories. The present study aims to reveal the opportunities and challenges in fostering a child’s reading interest through digital storytelling. All the details were recorded through observations, responses from the children while they were watching the digital story, and a daily journal written by ELT pre-service teacher. From the result, it was found that through their interactions with the stories, children were exposed by the values embedded, furthermore, their reading interest is developing where more optimal support from the parents or caregivers is urgently needed.
Newspaper has been acknowledged as one useful learning resource in EFL classrooms. In this digital era teachers as well as learners can access unlimited resources on the internet; one of the resources available for free and at all times is online news. However, nowadays some students are not really keen on reading news and reading it in English is even more challenging. For this reason this study aims to bridge this gap. This research tries to find out in what way reading news on the same topics in both the Indonesian and English versions benefits EFL learners in terms of content and vocabulary. There were 98 Indonesian freshmen from three Reading classes taking part in this study. They read both the Indonesian and English news on the same topics as their reading assignment during the semester. At the end of the semester an online survey was conducted to find out the benefits of the assignment. A focused group interview was conducted to gain more information on the subjects’ responses in the survey. The findings show that reading both the Indonesian and English news on the same topics enhance the subjects’ understanding of the content of the English news as well as help them better guess the meaning of unknown English words and increase their vocabulary knowledge. Pendidikan bagi kaum remaja merupakan masalah yang tetap aktual dan selalu menarik untuk dibahas saat ini. Banyak peristiwa dan kasus remaja yang terjadi di tengah masyarakat mengandung tuntutan akan pendampingan secara terus-menerus untuk mengenali identitas, gaya hidup, dan pengembangan sipritualitas mereka. Pendampingan terhadap para remaja di GBI Victoria Park Tangerang ini pun terus saja dilakukan secara rutin oleh orang-orang yang berkompeten dan mempunyai kepedulian secara langsung terhadap para remaja, yang nota benenya adalah generasi penerus bangsa. Peduli terhadap para remaja berarti secara langsung peduli terhadap bangsa. Oleh karena itu, pendampingan para remaja yang dijalankan ini bertujuan memberikan pembinaan kepada para remaja untuk lebih mengenal jati diri mereka, spiritualitas mereka dan memiliki keberanian untuk menyampaikan pendapat dan mampu berpikir secara kritis atas problem kehidupan yang dihadapi setiap hari; baik di rumah bersama anggota keluarga, maupun di sekolah dan di lingkungan bersama teman-temannya. Metode pelaksanaan pendampingan adalah dengan melakukan kegiatan pembinaan melalui webinar, yang meliputi tiga bagian utama yaitu dengan topik : ‘Remaja dan Karakternya’, ‘Spiritualitas Remaja’, ‘Belajar Bahasa Inggris Melalui Alkitab’. Dalam pelaksanaan untuk masing-masing bagiannya, selalu diawali dengan acara menjawab pertanyaan sebelum memulai pembinaan dan menjawab pertanyaan setelah pembinaan berlangsung. Hasil kegiatan pendampingan ini menunjukkan tiga hal utama yakni: Pertama, para remaja dapat memahami apa arti identitas mereka yang sedang tumbuh menjadi dewasa melalui tahap-tahap perkembangannya terutama pada masa transisi, dari masa kanak-kanak sampai dewasa dan mengenali karakteristik mereka dengan segala perubahannya. Kedua, para remaja mampu menentukan spiritualitas hidup mereka sesuai tren, gaya, mode dan selera yang sedang dijalani dewasa ini. Ketiga, para remaja dapat menggunakan Alkitab yang berbahasa Inggris, bukan hanya menjadi sarana untuk mengenal Tuhan lewat firmanNya, tetapi juga dapat menjadi sarana pembelajaran bahasa asing. Kata kunci: Pendampingan, remaja, identitas, spiritualitas, karakter.
Unlike in the past nowadays a lot of online resources for learning English have become more accessible and even free. The advancement of digital technology makes it possible to create user friendly learning applications and various formats of learning materials. The users of these online resources are not only limited to learners but also teachers. Teachers can choose and adjust the materials for their students without having to create them from the scratch themselves. Learners can also benefit from these free resources; with some guidance and recommendation from teachers they can make use of these learning materials. However, learners can also choose the resources to their need as well as pace their own learning. This descriptive study investigated the students’ perception towards learning English using online resources. There were 25 final year students participating in this study. A survey was conducted to glean the subjects’ opinions on their learning process using the online resources. The e-resources assigned were chosen from various websites related to the main and sub skills for iBT TOEFL tests since they took the iBT TOEFL Preparation class. The online exercises on the subskills such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar were also assigned to support their main skills. Aside from the survey, a group-focused interview was also conducted to confirm the subjects’ responses in the survey. The result indicates a positive attitude among the learners towards the use of online resources during their learning in that semester. Convenience and flexibility of using online resources are the strong points for this positive perception. However, the instability of internet connection sometimes hampered the smooth learning in accessing the resources. Another finding indicates that only self-study using online resources is found to be insufficient; the combination of independent learning and teachers or tutors’ guidance seems necessary if they are to take the official iBT TOEFL test
