Six hundred patients with pollen allergy answered a questionnaire about food hypersensitivity. Hypersensitivity to various nuts, fruits and roots was reported more often by patients with birch pollen allergy (70%) than by patients without birch pollen allergy (19%). The stronger the skin test reaction to birch pollen, the higher was the incidence of food hypersensitivity. A negative correlation was found between grass pollen allergy and food hypersensitivity. In the diagnosis of springtime hayfever, the presence of hypersensitivity to nuts, fruits and roots supports a diagnosis of birch pollen allergy.
Asthma mortality in children and young adults in Sweden decreased between 1994 and 2003. Food allergy and inadequate treatment were the major risk factors for such a death. Recognition and special care of patients with asthma who have shown signs of non-compliance, denial or severe food allergy must be encouraged.
I The effect of metoprolol, a new P1I -adrenoceptor blocking agent, was compared to practolol in the treatment of hypertension in seventeen asthmatics during concurrent optimum bronchodilator therapy with a selective 12 -adrenoceptor-stimulant. 2 The two ,B-adrenoceptor antagonists were given at two dose levels, practolol (200 mg and 400 mg) daily, and metoprolol (100 mg and 200 mg) daily, in a twice-daily.dosage schedule, at 12 h intervals, for 17 days. The comparison was made double-blind and a crossover design was used. The drugs were given in randomized order. The study started with a run-in placebo period and there was a washout period on placebo between the treatment periods. Spirometry, blood pressures and heart rates were recorded in a standardized manner. 3 At the lower dose levels no influence on FEV1 was noted, and no difference was found between the two active drugs. At the higher dose level FEV1 was reduced by both 13-adrenoceptor-blocking drugs. Four out of twelve patients given the higher dose experienced exacerbation of their asthma. The heart rate fell with both drugs and at both dose levels. During the placebo period a marked increase of heart rate was noted. The blood pressure fell at both dose levels compared to placebo, no difference being recorded between the two drugs.4 Metoprolol and practolol are equally effective Pi -adrenoceptor blocking drugs. In this study it was found that metoprolol could be used in asthmatics who had indications for ,B-adrenoceptor blockade, provided that the total daily dose did not exceed 100 mg. Optimal bronchodilator treatment with a bronchoselective j-adrenoceptor agonist is an absolute prerequisite in order to avoid the risk of aggravation of asthma.
A reference extract of mugwort pollen (Artemisia vulgaris) was characterized by crossed immunoelectrophoresis (CIE), crossed radio immunoelectrophoresis (CRIE) and quantitative skin prick test (QSPT). CIE revealed that the extract contained at least 42 distinct antigens of which 24 migrated towards the anode and 18 towards the cathode at pH 8.6. A CRIE analysis of the crude mugwort pollen extract, performed with sera from 29 mugwort-allergic patients, showed that 10 antigens may be considered allergens; one was classified as a major allergen, five as intermediate allergens, and four as minor allergens. The QSPT performed on the same 29 allergic patients established that 17.4 micrograms lyophilised reference mugwort pollen extract per ml had a biological potency of 1 HEP (histamine equivalent by prick test).
