The text provides information on taxonomy, morphological data, distribution, and bionomy on most recorded species of tabanids in South America. The distribution parameters of species according to classification by biogeographical regions are used. An appendix indicating the main studies about tabanids according to the countries of their origin is still offered.

RESUMOO objetivo do estudo foi identificar a percepção e as representações sociais que tem a comunidade quilombola da Ilha da Marambaia com relação aos tabânidas, dípteros bastante comuns em toda a Ilha. Um questionário foi proposto a 60 residentes. A análise foi desenvolvida com espeque na Teoria das Representações Sociais. Os resultados indicam que diferentemente de outros saberes que se encontram bem incorporados ao cotidiano da comunidade e a despeito de serem consideradas uma "praga", os tabânidas ainda é assunto praticamente desconhecido dos habitantes da ilha da Marambaia, o que pode vir a ser produtivo para o trabalho de educação sanitária e ambiental.

ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to identify the perception and social representations that have the quilombola community of Marambaia Island regarding the tabanids, quite common flies across the Island. A questionnaire was proposed to 60 residents. The analysis was developed with stanchion on the Theory of Social Representations. The results indicate that unlike other knowledge that are well incorporated into the daily lives of community and despite being considered "a plague", tabanids is still virtually unknown subject of the inhabitants of Marambaia island, which may turn out to be productive for the work of health and environmental education.
