Abstract. During two periods of studies (1980-1981 and 2012-2013), 31 species of tabanids were identified belonging to 16 genera on Marambaia Island, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Esenbeckia lugubris (Macquart), Phaeotabanus cajennensis (Fabricius), Tabanus claripennis (Bigot), Tabanus discus Wiedemann and Tabanus pungens Wiedemann are recorded for the first time in Rio de Janeiro state. Geographical and behavior data of the recorded species are also presented.
The text provides information on taxonomy, morphological data, distribution, and bionomy on most recorded species of tabanids in South America. The distribution parameters of species according to classification by biogeographical regions are used. An appendix indicating the main studies about tabanids according to the countries of their origin is still offered.
During studies on tabanids (horse-fly) populations on Marambaia Island, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the authors collected specimens of robber flies, which are predatory flies belonging to the dipteran family Asilidae. Robber fly species were identified as Lecania leucopyga (Wiedemann, 1828), Mallophora calida (Fabricius, 1787), Triorla striola (Fabricius, 1805) and an undetermined specimen of Taurhynchus genus. Lecania leucopyga (Wiedemann, 1828) and Triorla striola (Fabricius, 1805) are recorded for the first time in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil.
Abstract. Tabanids collections were conducted on Marambaia Island, Atlantic Forest biome, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Thirty-one species were identified belonging to 16 genera. Seasonal variation and its relationship with the most important climatic factors during 1981 and 2013 and observations on the bionomics of each species are presented.

ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to identify the perception and social representations that have the quilombola community of Marambaia Island regarding the tabanids, quite common flies across the Island. A questionnaire was proposed to 60 residents. The analysis was developed with stanchion on the Theory of Social Representations. The results indicate that unlike other knowledge that are well incorporated into the daily lives of community and despite being considered "a plague", tabanids is still virtually unknown subject of the inhabitants of Marambaia island, which may turn out to be productive for the work of health and environmental education.
