The present study aims at answering the question of whether there is any relationship between brain hemisphericity and non-routine problem solving skills of prospective teachers. One hundred twenty-three prospective teachers participated in the study. The Brain Hemisphericity Test and Non-routine Problem Solving Test were used to evaluate participants' brain dominance and achievement in solving non-routine problems. Spearman Rank Correlation Test results showed that there is no link between cerebral dominance and success in non-routine problem solving. This finding may imply that left-or right-brained students can be equally successful in non-routine problem solving. Besides, it can be encouraging to use non-routine problems in math teaching without any limitation in the sense of brain dominance.
Art, architecture, music and literature, which are thought to be far from mathematics, contain complex mathematics. The fact that Anatolian lands hosted many civilizations throughout history provided cultural richness including the relationship between mathematics and art and created Anatolian culture. Geometric patterns are frequently encountered in artistic and architectural works in Anatolian culture. Geometric patterns existing in Anatolian culture vary according to their fold. In this research, five-fold patterns have been explained mathematically by introducing the ‘Key Length’ concept. We developed a system that reconstructs an existing Islamic Geometric Pattern in the context of the girih mode that we presented verbally and visually in eleven steps. In addition, we introduced to the literature the concept of ‘Key Length’ which is used in the drawing process.
One of the main problems of Syrian refugees who took refuge in Turkey is education. Education is an important factor in the migration process as a tool of integration with the host society, preventing the risk of lost generation, reducing marginalization and radicalization, as a source of economic and social capital and upward social mobility. The subject of this study is the academic integration processes of Syrian students studying at Harran University. The research was carried out with a mixed method in which quantitative and qualitative methods were used together. The study is based on the results of a questionnaire with 326 people and a focus group meeting with 12 people. The study was conducted between March and December 2020. In the research, the results of the survey were analyzed through descriptive statistics, focus group interview thematic content analysis. According to the research findings; due to problems arising from war, immigration and other conditions, economic problems, language, exclusion and discrimination to a certain extent, accommodation, transportation, limited club membership and low participation in off-campus socialization processes, future anxiety in terms of employment, low book reading rate, factors such as insufficient household conditions, cultural ghettoization came forward. On the other hand friendship relations between the Syrian and Turkish students is a positive outlook. Satisfaction with academic and administrative staff is at a certain level. Şanlıurfa turns into a center of attraction to a certain extent in terms of education. Studying at Harran University is a joy for more than half of Syrian students. The results of the research show that a certain level of integration has been reached, but there are still aspects that are lagging and need to be strengthened.
In this study, the effect of educational computer games on students' academic success and their attitudes towards mathematics were investigated. The study was designed as a mixed method. The results revealed that after the implementation, no significant variation was observed between both groups in terms of academic test scores and attitude points. However, qualitative findings indicated that students in the experimental group got more pleasure from the lessons and their attitudes towards mathematics were positively affected. Also, educational computer games are effective learning tools and create a positive affirmation on students. Although this study was conducted in the face to face classrooms, the findings would be transferred to other learning settings such as distance and online education. Therefore, the experience obtained from such technologically enriched learning environments is discussed in the context of distance and online learning.
