Psychological factors such as stress, anger, fear, boredom, experienced more intensely in the quarantine 2 can also be demotivating agents for the practice of physical exercises. However, it must be remembered that regular physical exercise helps to maintain an adequate state of physical and mental health, bringing benefits mostly to the neuromusculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, metabolic, and immunological systems. 1,3 During this critical period, the offer of different exercise proposals on the internet is increasing 3 through social media, for free or paid, so that people can access and practice at home. This is an excellent resource, especially in this period we are going through. However, it is of fundamental importance that there is an adequate prescription of the exercise, according to people's needs and possible limitations. That should be done by a qualified professional so that it is possible to estimate an exercise program to maintain or improve components of health-related physical abilities.Which physical exercises are more appropriate to do at home during the pandemic period? In Brazil, the supportive scientific evidence along with the increasing Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) popularity has contributed to its current insertion in the complementary integrative practices of the Brazilian Unified Health System. This study aimed to analyze the quality of life in TCC practitioners in several Brazilian cities, to compare the quality of life among cities and between genders, and to investigate if the TCC practice time interferes with the quality of life. The sample consisted of 104 individuals (69 women) who reported regular practice of Yang style TCC at least twice a week for a minimum period of three months. The sample was 50.3 ± 15.4 years old, with practice time of 74.8 ± 50.3 months. We classified the participants as beginners (3-12 months; n = 42), intermediate (12-24 months; n = 17), and advanced ( 24 months; n = 45). The participants answered the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire (Portuguese version) to obtain a measure of quality of life. Based on the results, the practitioners were classified in the SF-36 as “good” and “very good”, with higher scores found in men vs women. Quality of life scores observed were similar among all levels and cities. The health domain that obtained the highest overall score was functional capacity with 89.42 ± 12.21, and the lowest one was the general health status with 66.94 ± 18.08. This is corroborated by international scientific literature, with emphasis on the regular practitioners’ quality of life.
Breathing is the most vital function in living beings. When breathing happens in a disordered manner in human beings, that may be the first sign that we are experiencing some dysfunction, whether mechanical, physiological, or psychological (CLIFTONSMITH and ROWLEY, 2011).One respiratory dysfunction that gets scientific attention due to its complexity is the hyperventilation syndrome (HVS). This syndrome is characterized by a set of somatic symptoms induced by inadequate hyperventilation, which may be reproduced completely or partially, by voluntary hyperventilation (RAPIN et al., 2017). According to Lum (1987), hyperventilation may have symptoms similar to asthma. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish one of the other, as the treatment of hyperventilation is curable and the procedures for achieving successful treatment differ in approach, mechanisms, and orientation. However, the lack of studies that state treatment efficacy is still a problem (RAPIN et al., 2017; VIDOTTO et al., 2019).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
