The focal point of this paper is on the view of the fifth semester students of FKIP UKI on the teaching of English grammar which was gauged through a study conducted in November 2010. The findings of the study, obtained via quantitative and qualitative approaches, revealed that a majority of the respondents basically viewed grammar is important in their study of English. They also viewed knowledge of grammar plays an important role in writing, but has no significant role in speaking. In addition, the respondents seemed to prefer explicit than implicit teaching in their trial to master English grammar. The paper concludes by suggesting the need to explore new approaches to the teaching of grammar to enhance students’ autonomy in learning grammar.
Anxiety has been a matter of substantial concern in foreign language (FL) learning setting for educators since it is a major obstacle learners need to overcome (Ellis, 2008; Wu, 2010).This study was aimed at finding out students’ language anxiety in learning the four language skills at a university level in English as a FL context. The participants were 71 students of the English education Department of Universitas Kristen Indonesia. Data was collected by administering a set of questionnaire. To support the data, interview was conducted to some of the respondents. Findings showed that the majority of the students were more anxious on writing skill, followed by reading, speaking and listening in their language learning process. It is highly recommended that the teachers or faculties be more creative in making the language skills classes atmosphere more fun and relaxing so that the students could achieve higher learning results. Writing the abstract of a final project or undergraduate thesis can be difficult for undergraduate students due to the lack of awareness of writing in academic genres, particularly the moving structure of each section of a research work. To overcome this issue, the writer attempts to analyze the rhetorical structure of undergraduate students' research papers in the abstract section. The aim of the research is to find out the rhetorical moves in the abstract section and whether or not this study was similar to the study by Bhatia [1]. To analyze the data, the writer followed Bhatia's move analysis [1]. The results found that the majority of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' abstracts confirmed Bhatia's findings. It is highly recommended that faculties and/or teachers should provide fixed structural move guidelines to assist students in writing their final project.
Giving instruction for a language class specifically a grammar class can be a problematic issue of controversy in EFL context for non native speaker (NNS) teacher due to the lack of approach or strategies implementation and the language problem faced in the teaching and learning process. The primary aim of this article is to provide some insight for teachers when conducting or giving instruction to the teaching of English grammar. It also highlights that in giving instruction, combining deductive and inductive approaches can be beneficial for teachers or faculties who are teaching English grammar in the setting of EFL context. Hence, they have to vary the strategies whether it should be extensive or intensive as suggested by Hinkel (2006) in which it might be one of the technique that can be put into account and applied in order to make the teaching of grammar more effective and efficient. Keywords : EFL context, deductive and inductive approaches
Studying Statistics to a number of students might be very difficult to understand due the lack of knowledge of the statistics and low interest of the subject. However, to some students majoring in mathematics might be easy to comprehend and operate the statistics. This study aimed to find out the students' perceptions and attitudes towards the statistics. The study employed descriptive statistics. The writers collected the data through questionnaire to get the quantitative data. The result of the study showed that in terms of the students' perception towards statistics most of them have stated that they mostly agreed with all the statements dealing with perceptions. This can be seen from the first three statements that they could identify the distribution, measurement, and procedure of doing the statistics. The only thing they disagreed is on the ability to communicate the result of statistics and their perception regarding the easiness of the statistics. In terms of the students' attitudes towards statistics, it is clear that the majority of the students showed their high feeling concerning the statistics. In terms of attitude on cognitive competence, most of them also agreed with the way of thinking to do statistics, understanding it, and requiring a great deal of discipline.
