With the extensive integration of the power and communication system, the power system gets more and more impact from communication latency, bit errors or breakout. Thus the study on hybrid system simulation for power and communication becomes more popular all over the world. This paper gives an overview of the current research projects in U.S. and Europe, and some developed simulation tools and models. Then, several methodologies of research and simulators are introduced, including Petri Nets model, modeling on single simulator, embedded simulator for hybrid system simulation, co-simulation with communication network simulator and power simulator, and Hardware-in-loop Simulation (HILS). In the end, the perspectives and challenges of hybrid system simulation are pointed out and the procedure of our research work in this field is introduced.Index Terms-Hybrid system simulation; co-simulation; power system; communication network
I. INTRODUCTIONITH the integration of power and communication system, power system increasingly depends on the supporting from the communication system. Some failures in the communication system may cause serious blackout in power system. One clear case of blackout happened in Hydro-Québec system, where "load was lost when a special protection system experienced a single point failure in the supporting communications system" [1]. Moreover, both the development of Smart Grid and the interaction between customer and power provider, require an even stronger communication system. So that researching the impact of communication with a complex topology on the transmission grid and distribution network by simulation attracts more and more attention, whereas the research on hybrid system simulation is still a big challenge due to the lack of proper models and tools. For reference, this paper introduces some off-the-shelf simulation tools for interdependency research and methodologies of co-simulation models and tools, and the rest of this paper is as follows. Section II reviews the research projects in U.S. and Europe, and some existing off-the-shelf simulation tools. Section III introduces some methods of hybrid system simulation for power and communication. Finally, the summary and the progress of our project are by the governments, such as European Project CRUTIAL (Critical Utility Infrastructural Resilience), which aims to the power and information infrastructure in different topologies and threats. Both qualitative and quantitative models have been developed to study the resiliency of power control systems for the present threats to their information and communication infrastructures, and the interaction between power and information infrastructure for a new class of automation systems and devices [6]. Another project (IRRIIS: Integrated Risk Reduction of Information-based Infrastructure Systems) dedicated to the interdependency analysis and modeling for the future communication and power infrastructure in 2015 [6]. In this project, SimCIP (Simulation for CI Protection) and an agent-based simul...
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
