A six-month-old beagle was presented with a three-month history of failure to gain weight, lethargy, intermittent vomiting and seizures. Hypoglycaemia, portosystemic shunt, lead intoxication, gastrointestinal diseases and hereditary metabolic disorders were considered. Laboratory test results of low serum cobalamin (Cbl) concentrations, anaemia, leucopenia and methylmalonic aciduria while the dog was receiving a balanced commercial canine diet were suggestive of a congenital selective Cbl malabsorption. Treatment with repeated injections of parenteral cyanocobalamin (CN-Cbl) at 50 microg/kg every two weeks corrected the Cbl-deficient state and reversed all the clinical abnormalities. Selective Cbl malabsorption has previously been described in giant schnauzers and border collies and represents a unique readily treatable hereditary metabolic disorder.
Severe adverse cutaneous reactions were documented in two dogs with acute skin lesions and systemic signs after exposure to several oral and injectable drugs. Because of the high morbidity and mortality rates of many severe cutaneous drug reactions and a poor response to supportive care, wound management, and conventional immunosuppressive therapy, human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) was infused on 2 consecutive days (1 g/kg per day) after informed consent was received. Human IVIG, with supportive care, resulted in rapid resolution of dermatological and systemic signs in both dogs; this treatment may be considered in other cases of severe cutaneous drug reactions.
Dogs judged as phenotypically normal by the OFA harbored clinically important passive hip joint laxity as determined via distraction radiography. Results suggested that OFA scoring of HE radiographs underestimated susceptibility to osteoarthritis in dogs, which may impede progress in reducing or eliminating hip dysplasia through breeding.
Distraction radiography detected the greatest range and magnitude of passive hip laxity in the 10 breeds of dogs. The difference in values between breeds known to have high prevalence of canine hip dysplasia and those in Borzois was greater for DI than for HEI. Breeds must be evaluated individually because of inherent differences in hip joint laxity.
Objective:The objectives of this study were to test the value of adding serial measurements to the Survival Prediction Index (SPI 2), and to investigate whether time trajectories add predictive information beyond measurements at a single point in time. Design: Prospective clinical trial. Setting: Intensive care unit at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Animals: 63 critically ill dogs Interventions: Physiologic data were collected within 24 hours of admission to the ICU (Day 1), and again on Day 3 of hospitalization. Measurements: The first analysis applied the SPI 2 equation on Day 1 and again on Day 3. Then a prediction model was re-estimated using Day 1 measurements, and the incremental predictive value of adding Day 1 to Day 3 change scores was evaluated. The third analysis tested the incremental predictive value of change scores in models containing only one prognostic variable. The final analysis compared the re-estimated Day 1 model to an analogously reestimated Day 3 model. Main Results: Using the SPI 2 equation, the AUC was 7.7% higher using Day 3 measurements than that obtained using Day 1 measurements (P = 0.515). Starting with the re-estimated Day 1 model (AUC = 0.925), forward stepwise addition of the difference score for each variable did not result in an improvement in the AUC. The AUC for the reestimated Day 1 model was not statistically different from that of the re-estimated model using Day 3 measurements. Conclusions: This study shows no benefit to repeated calculation of the SPI 2 later in hospitalization. (J Vet Emerg Crit Care 2001; 11(3): 183-189)
