Background: Acute gastroenteritis is a very common infectious disease facing all age groups worldwide, especially the pediatric population. Viruses, bacteria, and parasites are all possible causes of infectious gastroenteritis; however, viruses have become more frequently identified with the advances in the ability to diagnose viral infections, particularly rotavirus and adenovirus. We aimed in our study to compare between the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical characteristics of rotavirus and adenovirus among children with viral gastroenteritis in Lebanon. Materials and methods: A 12-months retrospective study was performed between January 1 st and December 31 st , 2018 including 308 children aged 1 month to 12 years, who were admitted to three tertiary healthcare centers in South Lebanon. Medical data were retrieved from patients' files, including clinical and laboratory information. Results: Rotavirus was found in stool of 204 patients (66.23 %), followed by adenovirus in 78 cases (25.32 %), and mixed group (rotavirus and adenovirus) in 26 cases (8.44%). The highest prevalence of rotavirus in our present study was seen among children between 12 and 23 months old, whereas patients infected with adenovirus were mainly aged between 24-35 months or 4-11 months. Majority of patients in the adenovirus and mixed groups had high-grade fever compared to the rotavirus group. Laboratory findings presented significantly higher average of white blood cells (WBCs), absolute neutrophil count (ANC), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the mixed group compared to the two other groups. Monthly distribution of rotavirus and adenovirus infection revealed a biennial pattern of rotavirus incidence during January and July-August while frequency of adenovirus infection was highest during July-August. Conclusion: Due to the high prevalence of viral diarrhea among the pediatric age group in our region, particularly rotavirus and adenovirus, along with the associated non-specific signs and symptoms, we highly recommend that medical laboratories be equipped for virus detection. Also, vaccination against rotavirus should be considered as a prevention strategy.
Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that regulate crucial biological processes such as cellular proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. The use of natural retinoids in cancer therapy is limited due to their toxicity and the acquired resistance by cancer cells. Therefore, synthetic retinoids were developed, such as the atypical adamantyl retinoid ST1926 that provides enhanced bioavailability and reduced toxicity. We have assessed the in vitro and in vivo antitumor properties and mechanism of action of ST1926 in targeting cancer stem‐like cells population of human prostate cancer (PCa) cell lines, DU145 and PC3, and mouse PCa cell lines, PLum‐AD and PLum‐AI. We demonstrated that ST1926 substantially reduced proliferation of PCa cells and induced cell cycle arrest, p53‐independent apoptosis, and early DNA damage. It also decreased migration and invasion of PCa cells and significantly reduced prostate spheres formation ability in vitro denoting sufficient eradication of the self‐renewal ability of the highly androgen‐resistant cancer stem cells. Importantly, ST1926 potently inhibited PCa tumor growth and progression in vivo. Our results highlight the potential of ST1926 in PCa therapy and warrant its clinical development.
Background: Inadequate use of statistics in biomedical research might not only affect science but also harm human beings if applied in medical practice. Biostatistics is fundamental to improve understanding and appraising of evidence-based medicine (EBM); yet, it is still not well understood and appreciated by medical students. Therefore, early exposure of medical students and physicians-in-training to research tools including Biostatistics is of utmost importance. Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the perception of Biostatistics by medical students at a private medical school in Beirut, Lebanon, and to identify its best implementation time in the medical curriculum. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study based on a self-administered questionnaire distributed among medical students in their pre-clerkship years (first three years of a 6-year program) who undertook Biostatistics. The assessment of perception was based on the 5-point Likert scale anchored by Strongly disagree = 1 and Strongly agree = 5 including 36 questions distributed into four domains to assess the course value, difficulty, behavioral, and expectations. Results: 186 of 269 students responded to the questionnaire, yielding a response rate of 69.14%. Around 60% of students declared that the knowledge gained from biostatistics courses is useful to their future career, and almost 70% understood the main concepts of biostatistics. 57.7% of students perceived that lack of practicing exercises might contribute to making the course more difficult. The mean score of domains was higher in females but did not significantly differ within the three academic years. Only 35.1% of the students positively perceived the importance of biostatistics modules, mostly third-year students. Conclusion: Although the majority of medical students perceived biostatistics modules negatively, they were aware of the relevance of biostatistics to their medical career and real-life health issues.
