A study involving 3 patients was performed to evaluate the efficacy of Matristem, an extracellular matrix scaffold derived from the porcine urinary bladder matrix (UBM), to promote natural healing in patients with severe, chronic wounds that did not respond well to standard wound management. In all cases, the wounds closed after only a few weeks of repeated treatments with UBM, with all patients showing complete epithelialization of the wound with limited formation of scar tissue by 13 weeks after first treatment. These initial results suggest that UBM warrants further investigation for treatment of chronic nonhealing ulcers that are recalcitrant to standard wound therapies.
The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the use of DermaPure, a decellularised human skin allograft, in the treatment of a variety of challenging wounds. This retrospective observational analysis reviewed a total of 37 patients from 29 different wound clinics across the USA. Each patient received one application of DermaPure which was followed until complete closure. A statistical analysis was performed with the end point being complete healing. All wounds on average, had a duration of 56 weeks and healed in an average time of 10·58 weeks. Individual wound categories included diabetic foot ulcers, which healed in 8·21 weeks; venous leg ulcers, which healed in 11·29 weeks; and surgical/traumatic wounds, which healed in 11·8 weeks.
Oxygen is an essential component of wound healing. The discovery of its critical role in maintaining life and healing properties dates back to the late 1700's. With the invention of hyperbaric oxygen chamber in 1879 research into the medicinal utilization of oxygen began and continues today. More recently, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been studied and implemented for a variety of functions including wound healing, but recently its effectiveness has been questioned. Due to some of its more adverse side effects, the development of a more localized therapy option transcutaneous trans-cutaneous oxygenation has found its niche in the role of wound healing. Compiling the research and studies of the use of transcutaneous trans-cutaneous oxygenation in the literature, a statistical analysis was utilized to evaluate its efficacy in wound healing.
