Background: Social cognitive career theory (SCCT) can explain the mechanism underlying the formulation of nurse turnover intention. However, little is known about the role of professional commitment in such a mechanism.Aims: The aim of this study was to explore how elements of SCCT have an impact on the three aspects of professional commitment and thus nurses' intention to leave the profession.Design: This study used surveys to collect two-wave data. Methods:The participants were sampled in all available units of a major medical centre in 2017. By using proportionate random sampling methods, we successfully followed up a representative sample of 524 full-time nurses. Most participants (98.1%) were female. Items came from Cunningham et al.'s Self-Efficacy Scale, Outcome Expectations Scale, Human Capital Scale and Vocational Interest Scale; Meyer et al.'s Professional Commitment Scale; and Teng et al.'s Turnover Intention Scale. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypotheses. Results: Self-efficacy was positively related to outcome expectation. Outcome expectation was positively related to career interest. Career interest was positively related to affective professional commitment. Human capital was positively related to normative professional commitment. Affective professional commitment was positively related to intention to improve professional capabilities, which was further negatively related to intention to leave the profession.Conclusion: Aspects of professional commitment are important process variables in the impact of self-efficacy and outcome expectation on nurses' turnover intention. This study suggests that denture treatments are associated with improvements of OHRQoL, but not in HRQoL. Furthermore, patients' satisfaction was significantly associated with responsiveness of OHRQoL but less significantly associated with responsiveness of HRQoL.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain the difference of national intellectual capital from the perspective of national culture and to illustrate how national leaders or policy-makers increase their country’s national intellectual capital. Design/methodology/approach The study conducts a descriptive analysis combining the research outcome of Lin and Edvinsson’s (2011) national intellectual capital with Hofstede’s (2001) national culture. The research findings and results of these two studies were compared before running a t-test to determine whether countries with relatively high national intellectual capital have a higher level of certain national culture. Findings Based on the matching data of 26 countries, the study proposed that countries with certain national culture possess lower intellectual capital. Countries with high intellectual capital tend to exhibit a common culture of low power distance, weak uncertainty avoidance, and individualism. Practical implications The study suggests that for a country to enhance its overall intellectual capital, it should strive for a culture of equality, freedom and safety, and an active competitive environment, while avoiding social class distance in order to eliminate insecurity. The study proposes some suggestions to advance the countries’ national intellectual capital. In addition to admit the weakness of their intellectual capital due to cultural reasons, these countries could go a step further to increase their own national intellectual capital by increasing or enhancing certain national cultures if possible. Originality/value The study compares national intellectual capital and national culture and finds the relationship between these two sets of constructs. This study proves that national culture not only influences the strategies or behaviors of business level but also the competitiveness of national levels.
This study explores the effects of visual condition and target size during four reach-to-grasp tasks between autistic children and healthy controls. Twenty children with autism and 20 healthy controls participated in the study. Qualisys motion capture system and kinematic measures were used to record movement. Autistic group showed significantly longer movement time, larger normalized jerk score, more movement unit than controls, especially in non-visual feedback and small target blocks. Autistic group also showed significantly larger maximal grip aperture and normalized maximal grip aperture in visual feedback condition than controls. Autistic children demonstrate motor coordination problems and also depend on more visual cuing in high accuracy tasks. Autistic children develop other compensatory skills while performing tasks.
