Background and Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the potential value of carotid artery calcification observed on plain radiographs in patients referred for carotid angiogram in the diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis.
Re: Workup of Carotid Calcifications With reference to the discussion by Drs. Hall [ I ] and Castillo [21, we draw attention to our study [3] ofcarotid calcification in patients referred for assessment of extracranial cerebrovascular disease. The potential value of carotid calcification as a marker of disease was assessed by comparison of the presence and degree of stenosis as shown by IV digital angiography and duplex sonography. The likelihood ratio for the presence of a carotid artery disease and would prevent some of the neurologic sequelae from stroke.
