This study aimed to describe the parents’ perception on the benefits and challenges towards home learning during the pandemic. Descriptive qualitative study taking a case in two elementary schools in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. There were 20 parents from both schools taken purposively as the sample. 20 questions posted on Google Form as the instrument. The results showed that the implementation of home learning brought two perceptions on the benefits and challenges. The benefits were regarding to possibility of home learning to provide an individualized experience and flexibility system of education, to minimize the possibility of the kids to get infected by the Covid-19, to intimate relationship between the kids and parents, to enforce as well as boost the parents’ digital literacy as well as creativity in carrying out the learning material. Further perception mentioned that the implementation of home learning also brought certain challenges to those parents such as, requiring more expenses to buy the internet quota, causing the kids less motivated and overwhelming in learning, raising the work load of the parents, time inefficiency for working parents by spending more time to assist the kids during the learning, increasing the tense between the kids and parents during the learning.
The cohesive devices are one of the important aspects of academic writing that has been recognized as a fundamental characteristic of good writing. The aims of this study are to find out the types of cohesive devices used by students and to identify the error of using cohesive devices when composing an argumentative text. This study recruited ten students from the fifth semester of the English language program in the 2021/2022 academic year. The research approach used in this study was descriptive qualitative. This entire data were analyzed by identifying the kind of cohesive devices used and also errors of using the cohesive devices. Based on the documentary results of the student's argumentative essay, it indicated that the students used only three types of cohesive devices as a reference, conjunctions, and substitutions. While there are two types of errors revealed in student essays of using cohesive devices, namely; references and conjunctions. The types of references included personal references, such as; they, them, and it, as well as demonstrative references, such as; that, those, and these. Furthermore, there are errors with additive conjunctions such as the using of and or. The Errors in causal conjunctions, such as; using the conjunctions so and because. The students often used the cohesive devices inefficiently, incorrectly, or excessively. In other words, the sentences are not linked correctly and properly. It seems that students cannot use cohesive devices in writing because they do not understand how to use them properly.
ABSTRAK Metode genre based telah dipakai dalam banyak studi. Metode ini juga memberikan banyak kontribusi terhadap peningkatan mutu penulisan dalam berbagai konteks pelajaran. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan partisipasi siswa kelas IPA dalam menulis teks argumentasi pada pelajaran biologi dengan menggunakan metode genre based di SMAN 1 Kupang Timur. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitan tindakan kelas yang terdiri dari dua fase. 41 siswa kelas IPA pada SMAN 1 Kupang Timur terlibat dalam penelitian ini. Metode genre based ini diaplikasikan selama empat kali pelatihan selama satu bulan berfokus pada bagaimana siswa menulis teks argumentasi dalam pelajaran biologi. Teks argumentasi siswa dinilai dengan menggunakan penilaian “systemic functional grammar” dalam pemberian pre-test dan postest. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa metode genre based meningkatkan partisipasi dan nilai menulis siswa kelas IPA. Kata Kunci: pendekatan genre-based, teks argumenatsi, penelitian tindakan, systemic functional grammar ABSTRACT Genre-based approach has been used frequently in many studies. It has been shown in any number of studies to contribute to the development of writing across different contexts. The main purpose of the research was to increase science students’ participation in argumentative essay writing using a genre-based approach at SMAN 1 Kupang Timur. This study applied an action research method which was comprised of two cycles. 41 students at SMAN 1 Kupang Timur participated in the study. A genre-based approach was applied four times over the course of a month to teach the students how to write argumentative essays. Students’ argumentative essays were measured by the systemic functional grammar framework in pretest and post-test. The research findings indicated that the genre-based approach increased students’ participation and scores in argumentative writing. Pantai Liman terletak di Selatan Pulau Semau yang memiliki potensi yang besar untuk menjadi sebuah kawasan wisata. Namun untuk mengembangkan keberhasilan sebagai sebuah kawasan wisata harus didukung oleh berbagai faktor dan komponen pendukung. Salah satu komponen pendukung adalah keterlibatan masyarakat dalam mengembangkan desa wisata. Sedangkan keterbatasan kapasitas pengetahuan dan juga ketrampilan yang dimiliki oleh masyarakat dalam penguasaan bahasa asing khususnya bahasa Inggris menghambat perkembangan kepariwisataan di daerah tersebut. Oleh karena itu, perlu dilakukan metode pelatihan bahasa Inggris. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan ini adalah ceramah, demonstrasi, diskusi, percakapan, drilling, dan bermain peran. Hasil yang dicapai dari kegiatan ini adalah hampir sebagian besar peserta yang mengikuti kegiatan ini mengalami peningkatan dalam berbahasa Inggris dimana para peserta sudah bisa berbicara, memberikan respon dan melakukan percakapan singkat diantara mereka dalam bahasa Inggris sederhana dan mereka tidak lagi takut untuk berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris, dan bisa mengucapkan kata-kata dengan pengucapan dan intonasi yang baik terkait topik-topik dalam materi.
