The long-term laboratory aspects of the effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on liver function are still not well understood. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the hepatic clinical laboratory profile of patients with up to 20 months of long-term COVID-19. A total of 243 patients of both sexes aged 18 years or older admitted during the acute phase of COVID-19 were included in this study. Liver function analysis was performed. Changes were identified in the mean levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and ferritin. A ferritin level of >300 U/L was observed in the group that presented more changes in liver function markers (ALT, AST, and GGT). Age ≥ 60 years, male sex, AST level > 25 U/L, and GGT level ≥ 50 or 32 U/L were associated with an ALT level > 29 U/L. A correlation was found between ALT and AST, LDH, GGT, and ferritin. Our findings suggest that ALT and AST levels may be elevated in patients with long-term COVID-19, especially in those hospitalised during the acute phase. In addition, an ALT level > 29 U/L was associated with changes in the levels of other markers of liver injury, such as LDH, GGT, and ferritin.
A significant proportion of patients experience a wide range of symptoms following acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Laboratory analyses of long COVID have demonstrated changes in metabolic parameters, suggesting that it is one of the many outcomes induced by long COVID. Here, we illustrate the clinical and laboratory markers related to the course of the disease in patients with long COVID. Participants were selected using a clinical care programme for long COVID in the Amazon region. Clinical and sociodemographic data and glycaemic, lipid, and inflammatory screening markers were collected, and cross-sectionally analysed between the long COVID-19 outcome groups. Of the 215 participants, most were female, not elderly, and 78 were hospitalised during the acute COVID-19 phase. The main long-term COVID symptoms reported were fatigue, dyspnoea, and muscle weakness. High body mass index and high triglyceride, HbA1c, and ferritin levels were related to worse long COVID scenarios. Our main findings indicate that abnormal metabolic profiles are related to worse long COVID presentations, suggesting that patients with long COVID may be more likely to develop clinical complications related to metabolic syndrome.

O Programa Institucional de Bolsas de Iniciação Científica para o Ensino Médio objetiva despertar a vocação científica e descobrir novos talentos. Este programa vem sendo discutido por autores sobre diferentes pontos de vista, e este estudo transversal busca analisar quali-quantitativamente o impacto do programa, sobre a escolha profissional dos participantes, relacionando a participação no mesmo e a escolha pela formação na área de Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde, identificando o nível e as características atuais de formação desses ex-alunos e a relação da experiência com o ensino superior, desenvolvido no laboratório de Morfofisiologia aplicado à saúde da Universidade do Estado do Pará (UEPA) no ano de 2011. Foi realizada uma pesquisa de campo exploratória, em seguida foram entrevistados 15 ex-alunos através de um questionário do Formulário Google, com perguntas abertas e fechadas. A análise da estatística descritiva obtida a partir dos dados organizados no Excel revelou que a maioria dos indivíduos possuía baixa renda, alcançaram o ensino superior em instituições de ensino públicas e seguiram carreira na área de Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde. Em relação à análise qualitativa, a maioria dos participantes alega a relevante importância do programa para suas escolhas profissionais e para o crescimento pessoal. Nesse sentido, o trabalho confirma o mérito de Programas como o PIBIC-EM. e reforça a necessidade de haver mais investimentos para a continuidade desse importante Programa.
Quantificar as fibras de colágeno tipos I e III nas formas clínicas polares e inicial da hanseníase. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram analisadas 39 amostras de pele conservadas em blocos de parafina, distribuídas nos grupos: indeterminado-MHI (9), tuberculoide-MHT (16) e virchowiano-MHV (14) e submetidas à microtomia e coloração de Picrosirius Red. As imagens foram analisadas pelo programa Image J e, para a análise estatística, usou-se o teste ANOVA (p < 0,05).
