This study depicts the students' perceptions of classroom discourse, mainly through extensive listening. The study recruits tertiary students from East Java, Indonesia as the participants of this study. The study applies a qualitative approach. The study concerns how they perceive intercultural awareness in classroom discourse. The findings show that students must enhance their intercultural awareness in understanding language, cultural, and religious diversity. In classroom discourse, they have learned a lot about both Anglophone and non-Anglophone cultures. They consider diversity to be special. They believe that every culture has its own distinctive traits. In addition, students tend to respect to others with different cultural backgrounds. It can enhance students' tolerance and intercultural knowledge. The findings may assist educators in designing and exploring intercultural tasks to promote students' intercultural awareness in classroom discourse. Future studies should be concerned with fostering intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence by applying other intercultural tasks.
This research focus oh how students apply pragmatylistics in personal essay whereas their background are organization activist who also have good academic achievement. This research apply some theories in analyzing data, namely: stylistics, personal essay and communication. This research used descriptive qualitative method. Beside that this research use two data collection techniques: observation and interview. So that this research describe phenomenon which relate to research problem. Based on the findings, students apply some of stylistics expression which categorize into two: (1) lexical features: pararelism, and rhetorical question, and comparison and (2) figurative language: accumulation, ephipora, hyphopora, personification, accumulation, simile, symbol, metaphor, and antithesis
Extensive listening takes an essential role in improving students’ listening skill. Extensive listening provides or promote students’ comprehension and enjoyment in class activity or listening practices. The success of extensive listening is depended on having easy the access of right materials. The present study examines on students’ perception of listening material in extensive listening. The present study only focuses on the materials are designed for some meeting in extensive listening class. In this regard, the material is meant to provide students with L2 listening proficiency. Allowing the students exploring YouTube channel is destined to have proper and pleasure material. In order to know the suitability and inclination of the material, descriptive qualitative research is conducted. This study undertakes interview to students who have participated in extensive listening class. The research findings reveal that the students’ perception on listening material are: 1) listening material motivates and engage students in listening skill, 2) students are very enthusiasm in discussing material of their own choice, and 3) extensive listening material is appropriate for listening practices. Because the material in extensive listening can expand their knowledge about the topic that they have chosen, enhance their word recognition in speech, and explores students’ ability regarding normal speech rate.
Intonation plays crucial role in news discourse, mainly: in producing utterance. Speaker has to consider the intonation of his/her utterance in sentence. In this case, speaker also manages their pitch in producing the each kind of sentences. Principally, intonation is the way of how the pitch of the voice rises and falls when we are speaking. Intonation helps or serves to determine the meaning of utterances. The utterance will be meaningless without intonation. The phenomenon encourages the writer to conduct this research on intonation in news discourse. This research emphasizes on how intonation in news discourse produced by students. This research employs descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research is spoken monologue. The data are obtained through recording the subjects while they are reading. The subjects use a microphone and laptop in recording process. The recording process applies adobe audition 3.0. In term, students’ speech production is analyzed through pitch tracks and spectrograms by using speech analyzer. Based on the findings, students produce two intonation patterns in news discourse: rising intonation pattern and falling intonation pattern. On the other hand, students use certain intonation pattern to declare information (statement/declarative sentence). Besides, there are two factors influencing production of certain intonation pattern by students in news discourse, namely: first language and knowledge
