Sour Gas Injection project has been successfully implemented in Tengiz field, achieving long term pressure maintenance in the platform area by re-injecting gas with high H2S concentration and improving oil recovery. From the recent gas saturation campaign, sweep efficiency in injection pattern has varied from 10 to 70%, with the highest sweep, as well as most of gas breakthroughs observed in Bashkirian interval. This represents effective and uniform piston like miscible displacement across whole Bashkirian that enhances oil production. Similarly, surveillance monitoring shows that due to higher depletion rate in same Bashkirian, it experiences higher exposure to injectant fluid (sour gas) causing elevated GOR production at surface, whereas, lower intervals remain at near solution GOR with lower sweep efficiency. Such, anisotropy between the upper and lower intervals in terms of reservoir pressure and sweep efficiency creates an opportunity for the development of lower intervals by implementing conformance control technology. Injectant breakthrough and GOR elevation in SGI wells create additional challenges for TCO, due to limited gas handling capacity at the plant processing facilities. Hence, isolation of Bashkirian will not only stimulate lower intervals to produce, but also, reduce GOR concerns. First pilot workover to isolate Bashkirian in SGI used chemical polymers. Polymers were injected into the formation and provided strong isolation of the target interval. As a result, time-lapse gas saturation logs confirmed significant increase in vertical sweep efficiency across whole Unit-1 intervals, plus lower GOR production lasted for more than 6 years. Completion type variety in existing SGI wells, make application of chemical polymers challenging, therefore, conformance control completions were introduced as an alternative solution. Conformance control liner provides mechanical isolation between compartments for more effective staged acid stimulation treatments and enable potential isolation of unwanted fluids. This paper will introduce application of various conformance control techniques to alter production in SGI pattern by developing lower intervals and reducing elevated GOR. A gas shut-off campaign was initiated in Tengiz field after a decade of sour gas injection. Case studies will be presented to share challenges and results during planning and execution phases.
Sour gas injection operation has been implemented in Tengiz since 2008 and will be expanded as part of a future growth project. Due to limited gas handling capacity, producing wells at high GOR has been a challenge, resulting in potential well shutdowns. The objective of this study was to establish an efficient optimization workflow to improve vertical/areal sweep, thereby maximizing recovery under operation constraints. This will be enabled through conformance control completions that have been installed in many production/injection wells. A Dual-Porosity and Dual-Permeability (DPDK) compositional simulation model with advanced Field Management (FM) logic was used to perform the study. Vertical conformance control was implemented in the model enabling completion control of 4 compartments per well. A model-based optimization workflow was defined to maximize recovery. Objective functions considered were incremental recovery 1) after 5 years, and 2) at the end of concession. Control parameters considered for optimization are 1) injection allocation rate, 2) production allocation rate, 3) vertical completion compartments for injectors and producers. A combination of different optimization techniques e.g., Genetic Algorithm and Machine-Learning sampling method were utilized in an iterative manner. It was quickly realized that due to the number of mixed categorical and continuous control parameters and non-linearity in simulation response, the optimization problem became almost infeasible. In addition, the problem also became more complex with multiple time-varying operational constraints. Parameterization of the control variables, such as schedule and/or FM rules optimization were revisited. One observation from this study was that a hybrid approach of considering schedule-based optimization was the best way to maximize short term objectives while rule-based FM optimization was the best alternative for long term objective function improvement. This hybrid approach helped to improve practicality of applying optimization results into field operational guidelines. Several optimization techniques were tested for the study using both conceptual and full-field Tengiz models, realizing the utility of some techniques that could help in many field control parameters. However, all these optimization techniques required more than 2000 simulation runs to achieve optimal results, which was not practical for the study due to constraints in computational timing. It was observed that limiting control parameters to around 50 helped to achieve optimal results for the objective functions by conducting 500 simulation runs. These limited number of parameters were selected from flow diagnostics and heavy-hitter analyses from the pool of original 800+ control parameters. The novelty of this study includes three folds: 1) The model-based optimization outcome obtained in this study has been implemented in the field operations with observation of increased recovery 2) the hybrid optimization of both schedule and operation rule provided practicality in terms of optimization performance as well as application to the field operation 3) provides lessons learned from the application of optimization techniques ranging from conventional Genetic Algorithm to Machine-Learning supported technique.
Sour gas injection (SGI) in the non-fracture platform area of the giant carbonate oil field, Tengiz, began in 2007. SGI project was proven to successfully maintain reservoir pressure in the platform area, add significant reserves, reduce sulfur production, and enable additional oil processing capacity at the crude processing facility. Despite the confirmed benefits, the gas breakthrough and increasing gas-oil ratio (GOR) trends in several SGI producers became a concern as the injection project matured. The preferential production from wells with lower GOR allowed higher total oil throughput, but also introduced production constrain on SGI wells with higher GOR. As the result, SGI producers were historically choked back or completely shut-in as soon as the gas breakthrough was confirmed and the producing GOR began to increase above 500m3/m3. The reservoir heterogeneity with the sour gas injection overprint created complex dynamic environment at the subsurface. Special surveillance program was designed to improve understanding of gas front movement through the reservoir, assess vertical and areal sweep efficiency and remaining oil in place in various zones of interest. Surveillance program design had to overcome several operational constrains, such as wellbore accessibility issues from the scale build, gas handling limits of the surface facilities, and complex simultaneous operations near the active high-pressure sour gas compressor. Moreover, the log interpretation had to consider crossflow and stimulation chemicals impact on the logging measurements. Finally, the integration of logging interpretation results with reservoir model was required to improve the reservoir model forecast and boost the value of acquired information. This paper describes the results of the conducted surveillance campaign, the novel calibration methodology of gas saturation profile from the time-lapse cased hole measurements with proxy from the multi-component simulation model output and the early results of the performed gas shut-off operations. The described methodology allowed direct calibration of the model outputs with the gas saturation results from pulse neutron logs and provided more accurate sweep efficiency and oil recovery forecast across the entire SGI area. Calibrated model revealed consistent gas breakthrough profile and significant volume of low GOR oil remaining in the wells with gas breakthrough. The updated reservoir model was then used to evaluate various development scenarios of SGI area. Gas shut-off scenario showed particularly encouraging low GOR production trends and improved oil recovery especially from the lower intervals. After the economic analysis, several wells, including long-term shut-ins, were added to the workover queue to timely realize production benefits. Early production results after gas shut-off workover consistently met or exceeded model forecasts. Described methodology provided more accurate scope definition, value assessment and justification for the SGI optimization project and could be applicable to other improved oil recovery projects.
