The purpose of this research is to identify the need to train and retrain library assistants in academic libraries. The researchers however used Babcock University Library to ascertain the impacts of training of library assistants. A descriptive design was adopted for this study. A total enumeration sampling method was used. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire. The population was made up of 30 respondents who were library assistants at the Babcock University Library, Nigeria. A total number of 30 questionnaires were administered. All the questionnaires were retrieved and were found useful giving a return rate of 100% used for this study. The result shows that library assistants were not given training in the area of system management and web searching. In addition, 27 (90%) of the respondents agreed that training will enhance their job performance while 30 (100%) of the respondents agreed that training will improve their skills to support library users in searching for information electronically. Based on the findings the researchers recommend that library assistants should be trained on electronic information technology usage as this will impact the overall service delivery in meeting the goals of the academic library.
This study investigated library infrastructure as predictor of turnover intentions of academic librarians in South-South and South-East geopolitical zones of Nigeria.The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Total enumeration method was used since the population comprising 400 academic librarians in the two geopolitical zones were considered appropriate for this study. A test-retest of the measuring instrument was done using Cronbach"s alpha reliability coefficient and face validity for the reliability. The result of the reliability test 0.85 at 0.05 level of significance. From a total of 400 questionnaires that were administered and retrieved, 334 were found usable given a return rate of 83.5 percent. Findings revealed library infrastructure in academic libraries, such as air conditioners, tables, Internet facilities, library building, power supply, fire extinguishers/smoke detector and fire alarm in Nigeria with particular reference to South-South and South-East geopolitical zones were at different level of dilapidation which affected services. The result revealed that library infrastructure is a predictor of turnover intentions of librarians (r = 0.647, p < 0.05) which indicates that an improvement in library infrastructure will reduce turnover intentions of librarians. The result showed that inadequate/unavailability of library infrastructure increase turnover intentions of academic librarians. It means that the higher the level of infrastructural deterioration in academic libraries, the higher the level of turnover intentions of academic librarians in the South-South and South-East geopolitical zones of Nigeria. This chapter focused on contemporary media for library users' instruction in academic libraries in South-west of Nigeria. Library user instruction is a complex activity that entails educating the users how to utilize library information resources and enlightening them on the benefits of using information resources in the library. Prior to the use of contemporary media in library instruction, several other methods were predominantly used including teaching and library tour, etc. Advancement in information communication and technology (ICT) has augmented those instructional methods. Some of the contemporary methods are articulated in this chapter and its application in Federal University libraries in South-west, Nigeria is examined. Findings showed that contemporary media such as OPAC, ask a librarian, FAQ and Blog, etc. are important in library instruction and were used for instructing users in academic libraries. Some challenges facing contemporary media in academic libraries are inadequate Internet access, inadequate training of librarians, lack of skill and unreliable power supply.
A lot of literature exists concerning acceptance and utilisation of 'social networking' (SN) tools in academic libraries from different parts of the world. However, only a handful of work has been done on librarians' use of SN in academic libraries in South-East, Nigeria. Therefore, this study tends to investigate librarians' use of SN in academic libraries in South-East, Nigeria. This study adopted a survey design using 173 librarians from the zone. Finding showed that some librarians used SN in libraries for delivery of library services. It also revealed that SN will be beneficial and cost effective for academic libraries to adopt. Some challenges identified in this study inhibiting use of SN in academic libraries are erratic power supply, inadequate skill to manipulate SN and other ICT tools, technophobia, lack of awareness, insufficient bandwidth, apathy in using modern technologies and lack of internet connection. The study suggested that SN can be adopted in academic libraries for library service delivery. It recommended that academic libraries should prioritise training and retraining of librarians in the use of emerging and current internet resources, provision of power supply, ICT facilities and internet connection to enhance delivery of library services.
Indigenous knowledge (IK) is the knowledge which exists among the people in a given community and its beneficial towards sustainable development cannot be over-emphasized because of its importance in every society .It has been observed and supported by Greyling, (2010) that academic libraries in Nigeria are not playing the leading role in the promotion of IK in the country by organizing tours to collect cultural ideas of the people for management. This paper examines Indigenous knowledge management process in four academic libraries in Lagos, Nigeria. Purposive sampling method was used to select four government owned tertiary institutional libraries in Lagos State. Cochran (1963) sample size table formula was used to determine sample size of 115 respondents from the total population (135) of the study. This study adopted descriptive survey design which make used of questionnaire and interview for data collection. The finding revealed that IK was available in the selected academic libraries and health information was the main reason for using IK in the selected academic libraries. It was also revealed that all the four academic libraries have no IK policy. The challenges facing the management of IK in the selected academic libraries are the lack of relevant ICT resources that can be used to preserve Indigenous knowledge in the libraries. The study recommended that library management should make fund available for the libraries to acquaire necessary ICT tools that can be used to preserve IK and there is urgent need for IK policy, this will serve as white papers in the promotion of IK use in the selected academic library. This study has joined in the discussion in the promotion of IK in Nigeria and it has also contributed to literature on IK development.
