Massive breeding is often the case with the availability of the amount of water that can be stored on the media. The aim of this research is to know the influence of media and frequency of watering to the growth of cacao seedlings and to find the best media and optimum watering frequency. This experiment was conducted at Agricultural Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sumatera Utara, Medan (32 m asl) from Juneuntil September 2017. The researchal method used was Factorial Randomized Block Design with two treatment factors. The first factor is growing media with four type, M0 (topsoil) , M1 (topsoil: sand 2: 1), M2 (topsoil: rice husk 2: 1), and M3 (topsoil: rice husks charcoal 2: 1) and watering frequency: watered 1 (one) a day, watered every 4 (four) days , watered every 7 (seven) days, watered every10 (ten) days. The observed parameters were plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, total leaf area, fresh shot weight, fresh root weight, shoot dry weight, dry root weight and root shoot ratio. The results showed that planting media treatment had significantly effect to plant height, number of leaves, fresh root weight, shoot dry weight and root dry weight. The best planting media treatment was found on topsoil (M0). Treatment of watering frequency did not significantly affect all observed variables. The interaction between the two treatments had a significantly effect on fresh root weight.
The germination process of arabica coffee bean takes a fairly longtime, due to semi-permeable skin against water. Dormancy treatment needs to improve germination rate of coffee beans before planting. The research was conducted at The Compost Centre of Agriculture Faculty, University of Sumatera Utara from July – September 2018 using a Randomized Complex Design (RCD) non-factorial with 5 treatments, i.e. P0 (Control), P1 (Stripping Bark Horn), P2 (Soaking in KNO3 0,5% 24 hours), P3 (Soaking in Sitokinin 1,5 ml/lt 24 hours), P4 (Soaking in Coconut water5days). The parameters observed were potential to grow, germination rate, vigor rate, germination speed index, normal sprout percentage, and death percentage. The result showed that stripping coffee beans had statistically significant increase on potential to grow, germination rate, vigor rate, germination speed index, normal sprout percentage and decrease on death percentage.
This study aims to determine the effect of osmotic solution on cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) seed invigoration with several long drying. This research was conducted at Laboratory of Seed Technology , Faculty of Agriculture , University of Sumatera Utara, from August to September 2016, using a randomized block design with 2 treatment factors. The first factor is a type of solution ie without immersion; aquades; coconut water 50%; coconut water 100%; Polyethylene Glykol (PEG) 6000 5%; PEG 6000 10% and the second factor is long drying with 4 levels ie 1 day; 2 days ; 3 days ; 4 days. The results showed that the best treatment of osmotic solution was found in treatment of coconut water with 50% concentration which resulted in germination rate of 5.51 days and vigor index of 3.79. The best long of drying treatment was 1 day drying with average germination potential 99. 17%, germination rate 4.46 days, normal germination 93.06%, abnormal germination, 12.21%, 5.35% dead seed and vigor index 5,34. The best treatment interaction on the combination of treatment type of osmotic solution of PEG 6000 5% with 1 day drying time resulted in vigor index of 6.80.
The application of bamboo shoot extract as natural plant growth regulator can affect plant growth of binahong. The objective of the research is to evaluate the growth response of binahong on the application of bamboo shoot extract. The research was conducted in Balai Penelitian Sayuran (Balitsa) in Tongkoh Village, Dolat Rakyat, Tanah Karo, Sumatera Utara on April to August 2019. The experimental design was a factorial Randomized Block Design with two factors. The experimental design was the Randomized Block Design with two factors. The first factor is the plant of origin from Tanah Karo (accession 1; accession 2; accession 3). The second factor is the dose of bamboo shoot extract (without treatment; 20%, 40%, 60% of bamboo shoot extract). The parameter observed were plant length, shoot dry weight and root dry weight. The results showed that the application of bamboo shoot extract significantly increased the plant length at 5-10 week after planted, whereas the application of bamboo shoot extract did not significantly effect on shoot dry weight and root dry weight.
Massive breeding is often the case with the availability of the amount of water that can be stored on the media. The aim of this research is to know the influence of media and frequency of watering to the growth o f robusta coffee seedlings and to find the best media and optimum watering frequency. This experiment was conducted at Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sumatera Utara, Medan from June to September 2017. The experimental method used was Factorial Randomized Block Design with 2 treatment factors, ie 1: planting medium ie, top soil ; top soil: sand (2: 1); top soil: rice husk (2: 1), top soil: charcoal husk (2: 1) and factor 2: watering frequency ie, watered once a day; watered every 4 days; watered 7 days and watered once every 10 days. The variable were plant height, stem diameter, total leaf number, total leaf area, fresh crown weight, canopy dry weight, fresh root weight, root dry weight, longest root, and canopy and root ratio. The results showed that planting media treatment had significant effect on plant height variables, stem diameter increase, leaf number, total leaf area, fresh crown weight, canopy dry weight, fresh root weight, root dry weight, and root canopy ratio. The best treatment of planting medium was found in top soil treatment: rice husk (2: 1). The treatment of watering frequency had significant effect on the stem diameter 2 -12 of week after planting move observation variable, total leaf area, fresh crown weight, dry crown weight, fresh root weight, and dry weight of roots. The best treatment frequency of watering hose is watering every 4 days. The interaction between the two treatments had significant effect on the diameter of the stem diameter variable, the total leaf area and the fresh weight of the canopy.
