The aims of this research are to describe the students‘ reading achievement and to find out the effectiveness of using story face in teaching reading narrative text. This research is quantitative using quasi-experimental design with purposive sampling technique. The population was tenth grade students and the sample was the students of X TKR 2 consist of 37 students as experimental group and X TKR 13 consist of 33 students as control group. The technique of collecting data are making instrument, expert judgment and conducting pre-test, treatment and post-test. The pre-test mean score in experimental class was 70.92 and control class was 70.55. Meanwhile, the post-test mean score in experimental class was 68.54 and control class was 67.76. It was obtained that z-value was 0.133 and the z-table was 1.96 for alpha (α) 5%. The z-value was lower than z-table (0.133<1.96) It means that Ha was rejected and Ho was accepted. Therefore, the researcher concludes that story face was ineffective in teaching reading narrative text at the tenth grade students of SMK TKMT Kebume in the academic year of 2019/2020.
Membaca, yang dianggap sebagai keterampilan berbahasa yang penting, adalah proses aktif dan integratif di mana pembaca mencoba menghubungkan apa yang mereka baca dengan apa yang telah mereka ketahui. Kesenjangan penelitian ini adalah beberapa siswa tidak tahu bagaimana memahami wacana secara tekstual. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang lebih tentang efektivitas strategi Petunjuk Kontestual (SPK) dalam membaca beberapa bagian. Pertanyaan penelitian adalah apakah strategi ini efektif dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca di Universitas. Siswa kelas dua di Universitas dipilih sebagai subjek dan dibagi rata menjadi dua kelompok; satu kelompok adalah kelompok eksperimen dan yang lainnya adalah kelompok kontrol. Ada beberapa prosedur yang dilakukan dalam pengumpulan data untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian; pertama, pre-test diberikan sebelum eksperimen dilakukan untuk memastikan apakah tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam kecakapan bahasa Inggris di dua kelompok mata pelajaran. Subyek diminta untuk menyelesaikan tes pemahaman bacaan yang terdiri dari empat puluh lima tes pilihan ganda dalam sembilan puluh menit. Kedua, setelah eksperimen dilakukan post-test dengan menggunakan tes yang sama untuk pre-test. Akhirnya, uji-t digunakan untuk menentukan apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian pemahaman membaca antara kedua kelompok. Tingkat signifikan ditetapkan pada p = 0,05. Kesimpulannya adalah penggunaan SPK dalam pemahaman bacaan memberikan dampak yang besar terhadap pemahaman siswa.
Tujuan dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat di SMAN 4 Purworejo adalah untuk membantu dan mendampingi para siswa kelas 12 mengatasi permasalahan menjelang diselenggarakannya Ujian Nasional Berbasis Komputer (UNBK) yaitu stres yang tinggi, tingkat kejenuhan juga tinggi, serta mood belajar yang cenderung rendah sehingga mereka memerlukan suatu sistem pembelajaran yang menyenangkan sekaligus meningkatkan kesiapan menghadapi Ujian Nasional khususnya Mata Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Solusi dari Tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat Prodi PBI UMPurworejo adalah dengan sistem pembelajaran di luar kelas (Outdoor Learning System) yang dikemas dalam bentuk permainan ala outbound yang terdapat 4 (empat) pos yaitu vocabulary corner, reading power, listening, dan grammar knowledge. Setelah pelaksanaan pengabdian, poin penting yang bisa diperoleh yaitu tingkat stress cenderung turun, tingkat kebahagiaan siswa naik, mood siswa cenderung naik, serta tingkat pengetahuan Bahasa Inggris para siswa dilihat dari rata-ratanya juga naik dari 72 ke 84 sehingga penggunaan Outdoor Learning System ini cukup efektif. This research aimed to analyze types of educational value found in Finding Dory movie script and its application in teaching speaking for vocational high school students. This research was a qualitative research. The instrument of the research was the researchers. The object of the research was movie entitled Finding Dory. The data were taken from the dialogues performed by the characters in the movie. In analyzing data, the researchers took some steps such as: watching the movie and downloading the movie script, taking the utterances, and transcribing the data. There were some procedures in analyzing the data. They were describing the data into dialogue form, describing the context, and analyzing the types of educational value. The result of this research showed that Finding Dory movie script contained 175 data of educational value. There were: honesty 7.43%, brave 5.14%, peace 4%, confidence and potential 26.29%, self-discipline and moderation 11.43%, purity 2.29%, loyalty and trustworthiness 5.71%, respect 12%, love and affection 6.85%, unselfish 6.29%, kind and friendly 12%, and fair and humanist 0.57%. Confidence and potential were the most dominant types of educational value that often found in Finding Dory movie script. Educational value found in Finding Dory movie script could be applied in teaching speaking in asking and giving opinion at the eleventh grade of student of vocational high school. Abstract. This research aims are to identify the uses of gerunds found in The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes and to describe their application in teaching reading. It belongs to qualitative research. The researchers used a collection of short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle entitled The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes as the data source. The researchers then identified the sentences containing gerund, classified the gerund found in the short story based on its use, counted the percentage of the gerunds, discussed the finding of the analysis, applied the result of finding in teaching reading, and drew conclusion and suggestion. In conclusion, there are 2 gerunds as subject (0.71%), 13 gerunds as direct object (4.59%), and 268 gerunds as object of preposition (94.70%) and they can be applied in teaching reading for the twelfth-grade students of Language Program of senior high school.
