Family planning is an essential element in primary health prevention, helping people who seek services, offering them the necessary information to choose and effectively use contraceptive methods that best adapt to current health conditions. This case report aimed to identify the methods of approach to family planning developed by health professionals. A report was made based on a patient who attended the health service for family planning actions, where she was seen at the outpatient clinic of a private University, located in the city of São Luís -MA. Data were collected regarding the patient's and family's health and socioeconomic conditions. The patient was aware of the need to adhere to family planning, although she was allergic to some types of contraceptives, she agreed to use a method that suits her needs. The importance of guiding and referring the patient when necessary to family planning services is proven, as well as the choice of contraceptive methods must consider the characteristics of the target population, such as the socioeconomic and environmental levels at which individuals are inserted. The results of the study may be useful to health workers, in order to promote the guarantee of sexual and reproductive rights of the population attached to their areas of coverage, since it is recognized that attention to contraception in the quality of life of men and women within the scope of primary health care.
