The prevalence of dental decay and the mean dmft were high and the care index was extremely low. There is a great need for prospective studies and community preventive programs to solve the problem of ECC and set plans to treat open cavities in RAK preschool children.
AimsThe aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of self-reported halitosis, oral hygiene practices and related diseases among Libyan students and employees.MethodsSix hundred self-administered structured questionnaires were used to investigate self-perception of halitosis and oral hygiene practices among a group of Libyan volunteers. Chi square test was used to detect significant differences between frequencies and to test correlation between self-perception of halitosis and measures of oral hygiene.ResultsForty three percent of the subjects were males and 57% were females. Forty four percent of the males and 54% of the females revealed self-perception malodour. Malodour was reported with the highest frequency (68%) during wake up time. Malodour was perceived by 31.7% of the females and 23.4% of the males during the hand-on-mouth test (p=0.04). Significantly more females (89.9%) than males (75.7%) practiced brushing (p<0.001). Fifty one percent of the males and 49.6% of females had dental caries. Smoking was significantly (p<0.001) more prevalent among males (17%) than among females (1%). Brushing was practiced by 85% of non-smokers and 68% of smokers (p=0.004). About 71% of the subjects who practiced brushing reported malodour during wake up time in comparison to subjects who did not practice brushing (p=0.041).ConclusionsThe prevalence of self-perceived malodour among the Libyan volunteers in this study is within the range of other studies. There is a great demand to reduce the incidence of dental caries and periodontal diseases.
Objective: To determine the oral health status along with the treatment need among Arabian children with special health care needs. Material and Methods: Fifty-seven special health care needs children aged 17 or younger, studying at RAK-RCD were recruited for the study. In addition to demographic data, the subjects were screened for the type of disability, oral health status, dental caries, occlusion abnormalities, and type of treatment required. Dental caries was recorded according to the WHO oral health survey criteria and methods. Oral hygiene status was recorded as good, fair, or poor according to the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (S-OHI). Occlusion anomalies were categorized using Angle's classification of occlusion. Results: Fiftyfour subjects aged 3-17year old, comprising 70.4% males and 29.6% females participated in the study. There were 7 (13%) subjects in the 3-5 years age group, 23 (42.6%) in the 6-10 years age group, and 24 (44.4%) in the 11-17 years age group. Twenty-two (26%) subjects had Down Syndrome (DS), 14 (25.9%) Mental Disability, 9 (16.7%) Autism, 5 (9.3%) deafness and hearing loss and 4 (7.4%) multiple disabilities. Forty-six (85.2%) had dental caries with a mean dmft/DMFT score of (5.67± 4.69). Only eight (14.8%) were caries-free. Thirty-five (64.8%) had good oral hygiene, 25.9% fair oral hygiene and 9.3% poor oral hygiene, with statically insignificant differences across gender (p=0.43), age groups (p=0.11). Nevertheless, there was a significant difference between oral hygiene and the types of disabilities (p=0.0004). Up to 41% of the subjects required oral prophylaxis, 89% restorations, 13% extractions, 20% orthodontic treatment, and 11% dental prosthesis. Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of dental caries and periodontal diseases among the subjects. The study highly recommends the education of the children's parents and caregivers on the need for diet modification, meticulous oral hygiene, and regular dental visits. Furthermore, there is a great deal of oral health program the RAK Rehabilitation Center for Disabled need to achieve.
BackgroundNeo-angiogenesis is an essential process in physiological and pathological conditions. However, it is a complex process. Several studies demonstrated that intra-tumoural microvessel number is a significant predictor of metastasis and clinical outcome in many tumours, including oral malignancies. The immuno-surveillance cells, mast cells and eosinophils are implicated in the biological behaviour of tumours. Nevertheless, their function in tissues is uncertain. Mast cells are involved in homeostatic regulation of blood vessels as well as host defence. In some malignancies, high mast cell density has been found to correlate with favourable prognosis. However, others reported unfavourable associations. Tumour associated tissue eosinophilia is a well-known phenomena. It has been associated with good and poor prognosis. However, the role of eosinophils in tumours remains controversial. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the prognostic value of microvessel, mast cell and eosinophil densities in the context of clinico-pathological parameters and survival in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.Materials and MethodsAnti-CD105 and anti-tryptase monoclonal antibodies were utilized to highlight and count microvessels and mast cells respectively in 81 cases of tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Eosinophils were demonstrated using carbol chromotrope histochemical stain. The densities were counted per mm2 and correlated with patients’ outcome and other clinico-pathological parameters using non-parametric tests and student's t-test. Clinically, the cases were divided into 4 main groups depending on survival time, lymph-node or distant metastasis.ResultsThe 5 year survival was significantly lower in patients with a low mast cell density than those with a high density (p=0.006, Kruskal-Wallis test). The survival group-A demonstrated significantly higher mast cell and microvessel numbers than group-D (p=0.007, student's t-test) respectively. Patients with well- differentiated squamous cell carcinoma had significantly higher numbers of mast cells when compared to patients with poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (p<0.05, student's t-test). The lymph node involvement correlation between the survival group-A and survival group-D was also significant (p=0.001, Mann-Whitney U test).ConclusionData from this study indicates that accumulating mast cells in tumours play a part in inhibiting tumour progression and is potentially angiogenic in tumours.
