ESA deployed the first Doppler Wind lidar in space within its Earth Explorer Mission Aeolus. The objective of Aeolus is to provide tropospheric and lower stratospheric wind profiles globally for the improvement of weather forecasts on short and medium term. Spin-off products are profiles of atmospheric backscatter and extinctions coefficients and lidar ratio. The observations will also be used as input to air quality models and to verify climate model parameterization and predictability. After the successful launch in late August this year an intensive commissioning phase is taking place in the first three month of the mission, including the first switch on of the instrument ALADIN and its calibration in flight. First preliminary results will be presented during the talk.
The first wind lidar in space ALADIN will be deployed on ESA´s Aeolus mission. In order to assess the performance of ALADIN and to optimize the wind retrieval and calibration algorithms an end-to-end simulator was developed. This allows realistic simulations of data downlinked by Aeolus. Together with operational processors this setup is used to assess random and systematic error sources and perform sensitivity studies about the influence of atmospheric and instrument parameters.

Abstract-The application of satellite remote sensing to the detection and study of wildfires has grown rapidly in recent years as new tools have become available and are put into use. Space borne imagery can provide a unique perspective to viewing the fire giving space/time coverage not available with any other observational system. One aspect of fires that can both be detected with satellite imagery and modeled numerically is the smoke plume produced by the fire. Surprisingly, most models designed to study smoke plumes were created to study controlled burns and not wildfires. We use one such model to compare model simulations with a suite of different types of satellite imagery to study a major wildfire. The 2003 Aspen Fire in the mountains north of Tucson, Arizona is used as a case study for the analysis of satellite imagery of a wildfire smoke plume in conjunction with model simulations of this plume. We clearly demonstrate that this plume model can be used to adequately simulate the fire plume as depicted in the satellite imagery when the plume achieves a sufficient altitude. For weak fires and low wind conditions the plumes often follow the local surface topography.
This paper presents some comparisons of rates of growth of total factor productivity of the food and drink manufacturing industries with other manufacturing industries and also of individual Minimum List Headings within food and drink manufacturing. Some methodological problems are examined particularly the practical problems of measurement of output and inputs. The chief problem was to obtain estimates of capital inputs suitably disaggregated and this was overcome by adapting some unpublished work by Elliot. Thus, the paper emphasises practical issues rather than examining the underlying theory, which has been much discussed in the literature.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
