A beryllium cylinder irradiated * 2 (E > 1 MeV) was cut into samples and tested. Yield strength and plastic strain was determined in compression tests at 300, 723, 823 K and after annealing at 1173 K for one hour. The Immersion density and helium content were measured on samples. An equation for swelling was derived from the data by regression analysis. The microstructure showed agglomeration of helium in voids or bubble:, at the grain boundaries.
Irradiated beryllium properties of tensile and compression fracture strength and growth or swelling were evaluated by statistical methods to determine the best estimate model from the data. The equations presented 22 2 extend the properties to a fluence of 3 x 10 n/cm E > 1 MeV. The annealing behavior indicates a threshold temperature for 1% swelling of 425'*C. * Work performed under the auspices of the Energy Research and Development Administration under Contract EY-76-C-07-1570.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
